ReplyDeleteThis is a playful and somewhat unsophisticated short piece from Jane Austen's Juvenilia (it was probably written in her early teenage years). The names "Henry" and "Eliza" come from her favorite brother Henry Austen, and his cousin and future wife Eliza de Feuillide (though at the time Jane Austen wrote this, Eliza was still married to her first husband).
Moreover, we see in “Henry and Eliza” the earliest form of two techniques that become sophisticated in Jane Austen’s mature fiction.They are point of view and structure of plot.Note, for instance, what happens in the fourth paragraph of “Henry and Eliza.”
Beloved by Lady Harcourt, adored by Sir George & admired by all the World, she lived in a continued course of uninterrupted Happiness till she had attained her eighteenth year, when happening one day to be detected in stealing a banknote of £50, she was turned out of doors by her inhuman Benefactors.Such a transition to one who did not possess so noble & exalted a mind as Eliza, would have been Death, but she, happy in the conscious knowledge of her own Excellence, amused herself, as she sate beneath a tree with making and singing
In the middle of the first sentence of the paragraph the point of view becomes Eliza’s (and remains hers for the rest of the story).From her point of view her benevolent parents become “inhuman.”And Eliza settles into self-satisfaction, knowing how excellent she is in her innocence in spite of what others might think.
Eliza makes so good a first impression on the Harcourts by her clever conversation when she is three months old that they adopt her and take her in.When she steals from them at the age of eighteen, they turn her out.She proceeds subsequently to make an excellent first impression on the Dutchess of F.Still eighteen, she steals the duchess’s daughter’s fiancé, quickly flees her house, but is soon enough caught and punished.In these two strands of the plot four elements recur:Eliza makes a good first impression, Eliza is taken in, Eliza steals, Eliza is punished.The last strand of action breaks the pattern by reversing the foundling plot.Eliza finds her parents, and Lady Harcourt remembers that Eliza is truly her own flesh and blood—her very own daughter.As she tells Sir George, who had wanted a boy, she simply forgot that she’d had a girl; and although he left her five-months pregnant before going away for four months, he seemed to forget all about that too.

ReplyDeleteWell this is a story about a girl called Eliza, who was found by Sir George and Lady Harcourt. They took care of her for years until she got 18 because she was found guilty of stealing a banknote of 50£. After this, she was turned out of doors by her benefactors. She looked after his friend and told him her last misfortune, she also told him her desire of being part of a family. Mrs. Wilson, who was the most amiable creature on earth, requested Duchess of F. to receive Eliza as part of her family and to take care of her. She acceded because of her friendship with Mrs. Wilson and she introduce Eliza to his daughter "Lady HArriet", who was on the point of marriage with Henry, a young man of considerable fortune. Henry and Eliza got in love, and they escaped to France, where they live 3 years and they had 2 boys after Eliza got widow. In these years they both lived togheter the Duchess had sent 300 armed men to kill them.
When Henry died, Eliza was on bankrupt so she tried to escape but some of the armed men catched her and took her to a place where the duchess put her prisoners. There Eliza contrived how to get out and she finally did it. She decided to get back to Sir George and Lady Harcourt, when she found them they recognized her and in that moment Lady Harcourt realized that she was her real daughter, and they accept Eliza as part of they family again. Eliza, with the power he had, demolished the Dutches's Newgate and she gained the Blessing of thousands with this.
This period was governed to how many money do you had and the man predominated and it is clearly shown when Lady Harcourt told her husband that she left her child because it was a girl instead of the boy her husband wished.
I liked the hole story but I didn't like the fact that Eliza escaped with Henry because The Dutchess and her daughter did a favor to Eliza and Eliza instead of thanking them, escaped with the future husband of her "sister".

ReplyDeleteFor a start, this story is about Eliza. Sir George and Lady Harcourt found her and decided to keep her as their daughter. Everything was marvelious until she was 18, when Eliza was acused of stealing a banknote of 50£. Sir George and Lady Harcourt realized that Eliza wouldn´t be able to continue living with them, so she went to live with the Dutchess. The Dutchess had a daughter who was going to get marry to a wealthy man called Henry. However, Eliza and Henry fell in love and knowing that their love was not correct, they decided to escape together.
After 3 years, Henry was killed and Eliza was captured by the men, who were sent by the Dutchess.Then, Eliza escaped from the prision she was and went with Sir George and Lady Harcourt. Soon after that, the 3 of them realized that Eliza was their real daughter; however, she was dumped by Sir George because she was a girl and he wanted a boy.
I liked this story because it is very romantic and showes what people in love can do to stay together no matter what the circumstances are. Also, because I could learn more about how people used to think in that era liked that money was very very relevant or that people was very very male chauvinist. I really enjoyed reading something new that called my attention.

ReplyDeleteWell, the story begins, when Eliza was found in a Haycock and brought up by Sir George and Lady Harcourt. They had no children, so they decided to educate her with a “Love of Virtue and a Hatred of Vice”. When she grew up, everyone could admire her.
Everything was happiness, until they discovered a stealing of banknotes. They turned out her of their doors. However, the transition didn’t affect her, and instead she wrote a song exalting her fortress and pride.
Then after, she looked for her friend Mrs. Wilson to help her to find someone who could receive her, a new home, so her friend got it, the Duchess of F, who accepted gratefully and pleased.
The Duchess had only a daughter, Lady Harriet, who was about to get married with a young wealthy man, Mr. Cecil. However, he fell in love with Eliza, so they arranged a private union by a chaplain who took the opportunity of the absence of The Duchess and her daughter.
When the ladies returned, they found a note: “We are married and gone, Henry and Eliza Cecil.” While her grace sent out and army with the orders to bring them, dead or alive, the couple were flying over the continent, fearing the vengeance of the Duchess.
They stayed in France for three years, and they had two boys. They could nearly live with the income. When Mr. Cecil died, Eliza and her children set out to England but she was arrested by the officers of the Duchess. She remained in her cell, until she managed to get out of it with the help of a ladder of ropes and a mass of clothes.
When she escaped, she was determined to return to her first benefactors, Sir George and Lady Harcourt, who totally agree her to return while Sir George hadn’t forgotten the incident. That’s when Lady Harcourt told him that Eliza was their daughter who was born when he had been on trip and she had been afraid of not conceiving a boy as he wished, so she left her in the Haycock. As soon as he was convinced, he forgave her for the robbery, and both accepted her with the children in returning home.
Personally, I believe the story didn’t like me that much, but the ending was unexpected. After the robbery, you could think that she will try to change and never exceed the limits again, but she did it with the courtesy of the duchess. I felt sorry for the people who give her a hand and she returned them just problems. What I like is the ending, when she discovered they were her parents, so that way, she could stay finally home. What is important to exalt here is the point that it was a woman who have the fortress to stand it and go on with her two children and for her, and not a man, as it happened during an era when men were the ones who did everything, and received all the honors.
‘…who was on the point marriage with a young man of considerable fortune.’
This shows how men were selected for his belongings and many, but not for love.
‘…but dreading your just resentment at her not providing the Boy you wished…’
This shows that men were expected more than women.

In the mean time, Cecil and Eliza continued their flight to France, because if they still being on the native Land, they would suffer the vengeance of the Duchess. Being in France, remained 3 years they had tow boys and at the end Eliza became a widow , this meant without any financial support, being conscious of the derangement in their affairs, immediately sail for England with her children , she arrive at the shore at Dover, but no sooner she was seized by the officers of the Duchess and conducted to a snug gate for the reception of her own private prisoners. She was despaired of escape until she could finally displace every bar of the cell but one to which she fastened the ladder, they descended after fling down the clothes in order to not hurt themselves. Once free, they parted and they realized the only remedy was to return to her old adoptive parents, Sir George and Lady Harcourt, they got at the steps at the door of a Gentleman´s house, they was just taken their post at the inn yard before a carriage drove out of it and stopped, Eliza advanced to the carriage and saw Lady Harcourt and Sir George, a mutual reconciliation took place and Eliza with her children ascended the carriage and returned to that home which she had been absent nearly four years. Finally, no sooner she reinstated in her accustomed power at Harcourt Hall, she raised an Army which demolished the Dutchess´s Newgate and by that act, gained the blessings and applause of thousands and her own heart.
In my opinion, what I like the most was that despite Eliza became a widow, she could go on with her children in find a new place to go ,until she meet once again with her old adoptive parents , they reconciliate and lived together once more. On the other hand, I didn´t like the duchess actitude of reveange even though at the begining she was glad with Eliza. Luckily her Army was demolished.
About the regency period, back at that time parents made their daughter to married a man of considerable fortune and women were expected to depend on her husband and take care of children.

ReplyDeleteBefore I started to tell something about Henry and Eliza, I would say that Jane Austen is a great novelist. I have read 2 of her stories and I really liked it especially "Pride and Prejudice"
Is about a little girl that was found by Sir George and Lady Harcourt. Their first & principal care was to incite in her a Love of Virtue & a Hatred of Vice. She lived in a continued course of uninterrupted Happiness untill she had 18 when she, Eliza, had a problem and she was turned out of doors by her inhuman Benefactors. I like love stories and this is not going to be the exception. I liked very much also because I have learned more about that era and how important was the money on that time. the end of the story really surprised me because nobody could imagine that she would scape and then realized that was the real daughter of Lady Harcourt.

Able to handle the situation, she went to find her friend who wrote to the Duchess of F. telling her if she could receive Eliza. The Duchess, who had one daughter, who was engaged to Henry Cecil, received her. Eliza and Henry felt in love and one evening, they left a note saying that they were married and gone.
The Duchess sent out after them her officers. Meanwhile they travelled around the continent and in France became parents and also Eliza became a widow without money.
She and her children returned to England but officers of the Duchess took them to prison. Luckily, they escaped and with no money she returns to her parents. Lady Harcourt recognizes her as her truly daughter and Sir George forgave her for the robbery and took them home.
Well, I really like the story and I was very surprised when Lady Harcourt confesses what she did with Eliza when she was born. I was searching and I found that they made a movie with this story but with different name. I would love to see it.

Instead of being depressed, she sat beneath a tree and she made a song. After some hours, she went to see Mrs. Wilson, her intimate friend, and asked her to look for a family where she can get into as a humble companion. Knowing her wish, Mrs. Wilson wrote to the Dutchess of F. and requested to receive Eliza in their family.
So she did, and introduced Eliza to Lady Harriet, her only daughter. Eliza met Mr. Cecil too (Lady Harriet's lover). They spent a lot of time together and they fell in love. They took advantage of the absence of The Duchess and Lady Harriet and got married. When The Duchess and Lady Harriet arrived, they were gone.
300 armed men were sent out after them but just after 3 years, when Eliza became a widow, they could seize her while she was going to Dover with her 2 children. She went to prison, but after some time she could get out.
She had no money so she sold her clothes in order to protect her children. But it was not enough; they had no food so she decided to look for Sir George and Lady Harcourt. While she was walking, Eliza saw a carriage and when she advanced to request for charity she saw that the women who was inside was Lady Harcourt next to Sir George.
They were so happy to see Eliza and Lady Harcourt confessed that Eliza was not only their adopted child but their real child.
I really like this history because of the unexpected ending. I would change the part when Sir George and Lady Harcourt turned out Eliza but without that part the history would't be the same.
Henry and Eliza is mainly about a girl that was found by Sir George and Lady Harcourt, a good couple. They teach her the love of virtue and the hatred of vice, so when she grew up she was admired by all who knew her.

The duchess received Eliza with a hug and there she met her daughter, Lady Harriet; and Mr. Cecil, Lady Harriet fiancé. Eliza and Cecil spend a lot of time together and then they fell in love. So one day they decided to escape and left them a note.
The Duchess sent an army to find them, while Cecil and Eliza were in France and had two children. Eliza became a widow but had no enough money. Then, all of a sudden, the officers of the Duchess captured her and her children.
Somehow she escape and sold her expensive clothes so she can have some money to eat. But soon, she decided to look for Sir George and Lady Harcourt. When Lady Harcourt saw Eliza she realised she was of her own flesh and blood, so they accepted her and the two little boys in their family again.
Well, in my opinion I liked the story because it gave us the opportunity to see what was that period like. That all that matter was mainly money, it was the time of excess for the aristocracy so poverty was a major issue.

ReplyDeleteI’ve been trying to look for more information to make my comment and finally a got it so here it goes.
Jane Austen developed her artistic skills since she was a teenager and she was considered out-standing in an era called “Regency”. This English period occurred roughly between 1810 and 1820. It took place between two rather distinctive periods; the Georgian Era, which dominated the 17th and 18th centuries, and the Romantic Period, which harkened the arrival of the Victorian age. This era was noted in history for its elegance and achievements in the fine arts and architecture because of the various changes in the social, political, and even economic ambits. During this period, King George III was deemed unfit to rule so George IV (his son), Prince of Wales begins his nine-year tenure as regent and becomes known as The Prince Regent. It is important to mention that during this era the mayor influence in society came from the King. Whatever he did or said was what the highest class respected.
One of Jane’s well known writings were Juvenilia which consisted of a recompilation of her poems, stories and plays. In Juvenilia we can find the story called “Henry and Eliza”. The names "Henry" and "Eliza" where chosen by her because of her favorite brother Henry Austen, and his cousin future wife Eliza de Feuillide.
This story started when Sir George and Lady Harcourt found a little girl who was about three months old. They were amused with her and as they didn’t have any children, they decided to adopt her as their own daughter. Time passed and they brought her up in the best way they could, teaching her about love and hatred and making from her a very good girl. Thanks to this, all the people she knew were enchanted with her.
Unfortunately, when she was eighteen, she did something which really changes her good image. This was that she stole a banknote of 50 £. Despite this, she continued being proud of herself and believed that she was almost perfect.
After having being discovered by her “parents” she went to the market to visit a close friend in order to ask her if she could look her new family. Mrs. Wilson (her friend) contacted the Duchess of F and sent her a letter telling her request. The Duchess accepted it and when she met Eliza she was very pleased. There, Eliza met Lady Harriet and they became “sisters” because of the confidence they had. Sadly for them, Eliza was not that kind and as days passed she began to fall in love with Lady Harriet’s lover (Mr. Cecil) and they got married without telling the two women. In consequence, when they realized of it, they became really angry and ordered 300 armed men to go and look for them and to bring them back alive or dead.
Meanwhile, Eliza and Henry were flying somewhere else in order to be secure. The spent their life in France for three years but for Eliza’s bad luck, Henry died and she had to do something in order to have a support for her two little sons and her. Thinking on this, she travelled by boat to Dover where she was sent to prison before than she expected.
At first she was trying to look for an easy way of going out but then she became desperate and made an escape whit the help of some ropes she found in a corner of the cell. When she and her two sons were out of there, she began to sell reliques from her former life and buy some clothe for her sons.

Even though she was trying to make an effort in order to keep healthy, they soon were hungry and she didn’t have other option to go back to Lady Harcourt ad Sir George house which was far away.
ReplyDeleteAfter walking for about 40 miles, she stopped at the entrance of the city when all of a sudden she saw Lady Harcourt and Sir George coming out of a carriage. Immediately, she went towards them and explained her situation. Lady Harcourt was totally surprised and realized that she was not only her adopted daughter but the real one.
As well as her, Sir George was also surprised to discover that his wife had been pregnant and the child that she had given birth while he was in America, was Eliza.
Since that moment the three of them were happy and all together came back to their home. Finally, things returned to be as at the beginning, Eliza gained again the blessing of thousands and was proud again of her.
Personally, I enjoyed a lot the story and in some parts it was funny. For example, when she tried to go out from the cell by the door, for me it would have been obvious that the door was locked. In general I believed that the principal message of this story is to teach us that we need to be good people in life. Despite this, what I found not that fine, was the fact that Eliza got whatever she wanted in the end. I mean, she did some bad things and for me it simply wasn’t fair that in the end she was saved by her “parents”.
All in all, I must say that during the whole story different aspects from the regency period are remarkable. As an instance, we’ve got the way of writing. In this period it was common that the stories turned into the point of view of one of the principal characters. We can see it clearly when all of a sudden we began to feel that the one who was telling the story was Eliza.

ReplyDeleteHenry and Eliza is a story about the life of Eliza,she was a girl who was raised by Sir George and lady Harcourt, they weren't her real parents but they tought her a love of virtue and a hatred of vice, that means that the tought her how to be a good person, and that made people be delighted by her presence.
ReplyDeleteWhen she turned eighteen she was caught stealing a backnote so she was turned out of doors(she was homeless), she did not feel sad or frustated, instead she looked for a friend who could help her, this friend was Mr. Wilson,and he made everything possible to find her a place to live, he sent a letter to the Duchess of F and she acceded to the request.
while Eliza was staying in the house of the Duchess she met Lady Harriet and the became like sisters, then Eliza met Mr.Cecil(Lady Harriet's lover) and they fell in love, and they got married but this made the duchess feel so angry that she sent a 300 armed men with orders to find them and bring them back.
Few years later, Henry died and she was left alone with her 2 children, she didn’t know what to do because she had no Money or place to live.
at the end of the story Eliza returns to her old friends Sir George and Lady Harcourt that were her adoptive parents, they received her again and she returned to her old house with her 2 children.
I really like this story because it has an unexpected ending and also because it talks about a girl who tries to suceed in her life dispite all the problems that she has.

ReplyDeleteWell I really enjoyed the story, but after I start telling you the plot, I’d like to start with a brief summary of the Regency age.
The Regency Era is that narrow period after the Georgian time of powdered wigs and gaudy satins, but before the Victorian time of dull, straitlaced staidness. Some say that when Victoria took the throne, she was fed up with the loose morals and hedonistic behavior which had characterized the Regency. The Regency Era, generally c1790-1820, was indeed a time of undiluted pleasure-seeking and over-indulgence.The Regency was noted in history for its elegance and achievements in the fine arts and architecture. This era encompassed a time of great social, political, and even economic change.
The story takes place in Haycock when Sir George and Lady Harcourt found a baby girl with no more of three months old that later they’ll call Eliza. Their principal care, just like the story says, was to incite her with love of virtue and a Hatred of Vice. She was loved by all the world, she lived in a continued course of interrupted happiness , till she had attained her eighteen year .She was caught stealing a banknote of 50 Euros or so they said. After this happened she was turned out of doors, with no place to go she immediately ask for help to a friend called Mrs. Wilson.
She wrote a letter to the Duchess of F. asking her if she could take Eliza like one of her child’s, she agreed and accepted Eliza delighted. One day the duchess introduces her to Lady Harriet who was engaged to Mr. Cecil. They fell in love almost in the moment they met, so they decided to escape together and they did. Afraid to come back they stayed in France for three years and have two children; after a while Eliza become a widow and she have no money, so she decided to come back to Harcourt and ask for charity. When she was about to ask to do it, Eliza was shocked when she saw Lady Harcourt and Sir George in the same train, they told her the truth about who she was, they forgive her about the robbery and they lived together again.
I loved the story, not only because its romantic it’s also because it give us a new perspective of how lived was in that time. How the status and the stereotypes were so important.

ReplyDeleteJane Austen wrote during the era of the Regency. In this period King George III was declared unfit to rule so his son the Prince of Wales took this charge and he started to do his father's work. Some years later he took the charge of his father having the name of King George IV.
This story Henry and Eliza is a story about Jane Austen when she was in her early teenage years. Henry was the name of her favourite brother so that's why she put that name to the principal character.
Eliza was a girl who was raised by Sir George and Lady Harcourt. They wanted to incline in her a Love of Virtue and a hatred of vice, so she would be a good person and she would be like an example for the society.
When she turned 18 she was detected of stealing a banknote of 50€ so she was expeled from her house and she became homeless.
She had a friend called Mr. Wilson, he did everything he could for her to find her a home. One of the solutions was to write a letter to the Duchess and she accepted her in her house.
There in the house she made many friends. and also she found her husband called Mr. Cecil and the run out. The duchess was so angry that she sent 300 armed men to search them and to bring them back.
She had two children. Years after Mr. Cecil died. She was alone withe the two children. She did not have money or a place to live so she returned to the house where she grew up. The recieved her and she stayed there.
I loved the story, it shows that in spite of the problems we can succed in our lifes. Also we can learn that each one have a friend who can help us in the worsts situations. And that's a rol of a friend. Love that story.
Well, i'm going to tell a little from Henry and Eliza by Jane Austen,this is a short piece from Jane Austen's Juvenilia (it was probably written in her early teenage years). Touched with the enchanting Graces of her face & delighted with the infantine tho' sprightly answers she returned to their many questions, they resolved to take her home &, having no Children of their own, to educate her with care & cost.

I really like this story because it's very interesting knowing how was the era years ago, and we can see how important was the money on that time, every mother want to marry her daugters with the most rich man! and the love doesn't care. Here it show that love always grow up, and I really like romantic stories that shows how love is always doing the best and always won.

Hi Miss, to begin with i am going to talk about the lifestyle of the Regency period. In those times, a gentleman devoted his life to relieving boredom. The focal point of high society was dancing, dances were also events at which the young and single might hope to meet a future partner. The Etiquette and Culture were 2 themes very important for the people.

The story begins when a couple, Sir George and Lady Harcourt found a girl called Eliza. They were alone so decided to care the cute girl. They learned her by the Love of Virtue & a Hatred of Vice. Everything was perfect until she got 18 because she was found guilty of stealing a banknote of 50£. She had been sad until she talked about her desire to have a family with Mrs Wilson. Mrs Wilson told the Dutchess about Eliza, and she accepted to receive Eliza as part of her family and to take care of her. The Dutchess had a daughter called Lady Harriet, she was Mr Cecil`s fiance. Mr Cecil (Henry) was a rich man. Henry and Elisa spent a lot of time together and fell in love. After that, they escaped to France and had 2 boys. The Duchess sent 300 armed men and they killed Mr Cecil. Eliza was alone with her sons, and for that reason returned to England. When she had escaped, the duchess caught them and took like her prisoners.
Then, Eliza escaped from the prison. One day, she was walking and saw Lady Harcourt next to Sir George. They were so happy to see Eliza again. They resolved the problems and Lady Harcourt told Eliza that she was her real mom.
In my opinion, the story is amazing. When I started to read the summaries I thought it`s going to be a simple love story. But now, I am sure that the story is fantastic, Eliza and Mr Cecil were courageous to leave their lives, forget everything and loved each other. They forgot the social levels and the Dutchess`s power to escaped together. It was obvious that the Dutchess wanted to kill them, however I feel so sad when Mr. Cecil died. The end was unexpected but really good, I never thought Eliza would be Lady Harcourt`s real daughter.
In conclusion, the Jane Austen`s novels are excellent, the plots and the characters are interesting.

There in England the policeman put her in jail but she escaped with ropes and ladders.
She had no money so she sold her cloths, but also they didn't hava food so she returned to her old house(Sir george and Lady Harcourt) with her children and lived happily ever after.
I enjoy the story because it was very interesting and unpredictablo.

They were delighted with her beauty and her grace and so they resolved to take her home and raise her as a child of their own. They were careful to raise her as a good girl, to teach her to love virtues and despise vices. They did a great job. When she grew up, she delighted everyone who met her.
Eliza lived many happy years with her adoptive parents, until they discovered the stealing of a bank note of 50f and kicked her out of the house. She acted like she didn´t mind. She found happiness in thought of her own excellence and amused herself singing a song beneath a tree.
Then she left to look for her friend Mrs. Wilson and told her ,her misfortune. Mrs. Wilson wrote a letter to her friends the Duchess of F requesting her help with Eliza by accepting the girl to work for her.
The Duchess was as everybody else, delighted and pleased with Eliza and she accepted her.
The Duchess was a widow and she had only one daughter, Lady Harriet, who was engaged to rather wealthy man, Mr. Cecil.
Mr. Cecil was often close to Eliza as he visited Harriet and soon, fell in love with her. They decided to marry when the Duchess and Lady Harriet left one night for an assembly, and they were united by the chaplain who worked for the Duchess.
They Left a note explaining the whole affair and fled to the continent and away from the duchess. They lived in France for 3 years and then Mr. Cecil died leaving Eliza with two boys to raise on her own.
When she arrived at Dover, she was immediately seized by the officers of the duchess and conducted to a Dungeon at New gate prison.
There, she found a rope and a ladder and somehow using her clothes, she managed to escape with her sons.
She sold her wardrobe and bought cheaper clothes in order to feed hers sons. But soon, she couldn’t maintain them anymore and she parted to meet her old adopting parents hoping for their mercy.
She arrived to the place of her childhood and was soon recognized by the Lady Harcourt and Sir George. It turns out that she was really their daughter. Lady Harcourt had forgotten her abandoning of her child and afterwards the found her.
She was reinstated in her old home and as soon as possible, raised an army with which she demolished the Duchess New gate and gained the blessing of thousands of people and the applause of her own heart.
The aspects that I found that are close to the regency period are:
-The excess of aristocracy (the duchess and all her power)
-The wars
-The altering of British social structure
-The excessive spending of the aristocracy
I really don’t know what to think about Eliza, I just can’t decide whether for me she was a good person that had many misfortunes and went into a lot of trouble for marrying the man she loved or rather an egocentric person who brought problems to everybody who received her. Did she really steal the money?
Anyhow, I really liked the plot of this novel and how it has an unexpected finale.

It's a interest story, because we can see that Eliza could succeed in everything despite everything she had to go through.

In those days Eliza and her kids started to escape from the police who were looking for her as she was fleeing she find lady Harcourt that had realize Eliza was her biology daughter who was be abandoned because the marriage want a baby boy .
I realy love the story beacuse it describes a young girl that don`t intimidate about the problems and try to solve them in a good way with all the virtues she have learn . In my own opinion i think that society was to rude girls and women beacuse they were no accepted us we can see at the end of the story . It has a unexpected end and the story is very easy to read and understand .

Eliza found a good family to work with Duchess and her daughter , and she felt a Lady Harriet like a sister. Regrettably Eliza fell in love with Lady Harriet’s fiancé, Then they ran away and they had two sons. The family of Lady Harriet decided to look for them and kill Henry and they locked Eliza but she couldn’t escape. Finally she knew that her First parents are her true parents.
I think that this story was very interesting because it was an incredible ending, it have all love and suspense. I like very much .
Te life style in XVIIth Century was so different than today , they have a lot of punishment, they the women were not treated like men were treated less than others.

ReplyDeleteIt begins when Sir George and Lady Harcourt, found a girl of 3 months old in the Haycock and decided to adopt her. This is how, Eliza had a privileged education, and her new parents incite on her great values and gave love.
At the age of eighteen, she was expulsed to her fate, for stealing a banknote. She went to ask Mrs. Wilson for help. The amiable woman wrote a letter to the Duchess, telling about Eliza. The Duchess acceded. Her daughter was about to marry Henry, but he finally fell in love with Eliza, who escaped together one evening and got married.
She became widow and mother of two boys after 3 years. With no money, was seized by the officers of the Duchess. She managed to escape caring for her children. When she spent all the money in unnecessary things, hunger began to feel. While looking charity in some Inn, she found Lady Harcourt and Sir George.
Lady Harcourt confessed that Eliza was her real child, so finally they forgive her and returned together to their mansion in happiness. She decided to raise an army, which demolished the Duchess’s Newgate and everybody blessed her.
I really like reading the plot of Henry and Eliza because of the way Eliza, in spite of all the mistakes she committed and the misfortunes she had, life and fortune always return to her like when she was found by her real parents. After all, she is a good and intelligent person how knew how to survive in the most difficult moments.
The references to the Regency period I can found is the aristocracy in the Duchess that want to concentrate all the power. Also, the great refinement and cultural achievement affecting the society, for example when Eliza prefer to bought a gold watch than food for her children.

Henry and Eliza is not an exception. This is an history of a girl who was took by Sir George and Lady Harcourt, her life was full of happiness until she turn eighteen and Eliza was accused of stealing a banknote of 50£,For that her benefactors turned her out of doors. She felt so lonely but she stilled knew she was a very wise girl. She went to her friend Sarah Wilson to ask for a family, Mrs. Wilson asked The Duchess who was glad to received Eliza. Eliza made a good impression and when She meet Laddy Harrie , she thought Eliza and her could be like sisters but then her fiancé fall in love with Eliza. Henry and Eliza escaped and went to France, the Duchess sent armed men to murder them. Henry and Eliza had 2 kids but her Henry was killed and Eliza was poor, but soon enough captured. She like a mother was afraid if she escaped this action would hurt her child, so she took her closed out and put it down so her children wouldn’t hurt theirselves. After she made it she found lady Harcourt and Sir George. Lady Harcourt realized that Eliza was her daughter and she left Eliza because Sir George wanted a Boy.
Eliza was a perfect kid then she was punished for making a mistake, she fall in love with Prohibited man, so she was “guilty” of that too. Then she was left by her parent because she was NOT A MAN. With this we realized that women were having a rough time and in that time women had to get married sonner and with a rich boy.

Fortunately he woke up and contacted his friend, the Duchess. Lady Harriet, was the Duchess' daughter and she was engaged to Mr. Cecil. Lady Eliza and Harriet, became very close friends. After some time, Eliza and Mr. Cecil felt in love and secretly married Lady Harriet and the Duchess.
This made the daughter of the Duchess became angry, so she sent three hundred men to look for the couple, no matter if they were alife or not.
Eliza and Mr. Cecil, went to Paris and stayed there for three years. While they were living there, they got two children. Unfortunately Mr. Cecil died.
At the end, she noticed that Sir George and Lady Harcourt were not her parents. As she did not know where to go and stayed, they welcome her as in the first day.
I loved the story very much, beacuse since it beggins it starts talking about a girl, so it makes me feel as if she is one of my friends or someone I know. Our parents are always teaching us the best of the world, we just need to put it in practice and to avoid being swayed by others who can break our principles. Of course, once more, I could notice that the century where we are living nowadays are very different to the one long time ago, at least when it comes to woman.

The Duchess and Lady Harriet being engaged one evening to an assembly, Henry and Eliza took the opportunity of their absence and where united by the enamoured Chaplain. They leave a note saying that thet got married and that the escape. The Duchess send a troop to look for them but they never were found because they were travelling all over Europe.
Three years later at France, they had 2 kids but Henry died and Eliza ran out of money. She decided to go back to England but the Duchess troop found her and took her to prision.
At prison Eliza found some tools, using them she opened the gate and escape. To make money she began selling the few things she had.

After Henry’s death, Eliza and her children where in a terrible situation because they didn’t have enough money to survive. For this reason she decided to return to England where she is caught by the officers of the Duchess. She managed to get out of prison with her sons and then she returned with Sir George and Lady Harcourt. It turns out that Eliza was daughter of them. They forgave her for the robbery and she gets back to her family with her sons.
I really enjoy this story because the end wasn’t what I had in mind and that made me follow the lecture until the end with curiosity. In this story we can see the society that existed at that time, for example all the power that had the aristocracy and how the men were really important and the influenced they had while women were not so important.

The story begins when Eliza being no more than 3 months old was found by Sir George and Lady Harcourt. They were immediately captured by her enchanting graces of her face that make them decided to raise her with care and cost. She was living a life of happiness until she turned 18 years old, when one day she was discovered stealing a banknote of £50; she was turned out of doors by her inhuman Benefactors.
Having amused herself some hours, she asked Mrs. Wilson for help, in order to find another family to live with. Eliza was accepted, as the Duchess and Mrs. Wilson were really closed friends and also because she was a widow woman and had only one daughter. Lady Harriet then considered Eliza as her sister. In spite of the promise Eliza made to Lady Harriet, she betrayed her trust by falling in love with Lady’s Harriet lover (Henry Cecil) and marring him.
In the mean time, they decided to go out of England because Lady Harriet sent out after them 300 armed men to kill them. They had two children in France, but after Henry’s death Eliza was broken as the money was over. She decided to return to England, but during this transition she was caught by the Duchess army and locked. Fortunately she looked out how to escape, and now she was determined to return to her first benefactors, Sir George and Lady Harcourt. That’s when Lady Harcourt realizes Eliza is her daughter and explains Sir George how things happened. He forgave her about the robbery and both accepted her with the children in returning home.
In this playful we can see that men are more important than women, for example when Lady Harcourt abandoned her daughter just because she was afraid Sir George wouldn’t accept her because he wanted to have a son instead of a girl.
I really like this story because I found the end really interesting as it was unexpected. But I didn’t like the fact that Henry being engaged with Lady Harriet married Eliza because he was compromised with someone else. Also we can see that money was something important as they mention “who was the point of marriage with a young man of considerable fortune”.

After 3 years in France, they had two children, but then Eliza became a widow, without the money to support her life and her children.
Then, Eliza was seized by the men of the Duchess and was conducted to a dungeon. She tried in many opportunities to escape from the prison and finally she succeeded in escaping from there. But she did not know where to go and after walking 30 miles she went to Inn where she used to go with Sir George and Lady Harcourt. Accidentally, she found them, and they recognized her as their daughter. So Eliza, finally, stayed with her real parents and her children.
From my point of view, the novel was interesting, specially the end because it was unexpected, but there are some things that I don't like too much and I find them contradictory, for example, the fact that Eliza didn't have a good behaviour during her life (she escape with "her sister's fiance", she leave the Duchess without an acceptable explanation, she stole a banknote, etc.), although she was a child who had received a excellent education.
The things that I consider are characteristics of the Regency period are the following: men were more considered than woman; the economical feature was taking into consideration almost all the time, even if you had to choose a husband; the power that had the public governors (for example the Duchess influence in the mayority of population of the place.

Well, this story is about a girld lady Eliza and man named Henry. It begins when Eliza was found by Sir George and Lady Harcourt in a Haycock. As they didn’t have any children they took the decisión to take care of her. Their objetive was to raise her in a “Love of Virtue and a Hatred of Vice”, when she became a young lady, everybody who knows her, admire her. She was the delight of everyone.
She was linving a happy life, until she was turned out of doors when she was accused from stealing a banknote. It didn’t really affect her, instead of feeling depressed or helpless, she wrote a song, a beautiful one.
As she didn’t have anywhere to live in, she ask Mrs Wilson (her close friend) for help. She ask her if she could find someone that could receive her. Mrs Wilson took the request and look for the Duchess of F, who kindly accepted the petition.
The Duchess of F, had only one daughter called Lady Harriet, who was going to married Mr Cecil. The Duchess introduced her to her daughter, so she also had the oportunity to meet Mr Cecil, they became very closed and they finally fell in love. They know about the absence of The Duchess and Lady Harriet so they got married when they were not there. When The Duchess and Lady Harriet arrived, they found a note telling then that they were married, the couldn’t do anything, they were gone.
The Duchess sent a group of armed men to look for them. While they were looking for them they where travelling around the continent. In one of the cities, they had become parents. The armed men just could find her until she was a widow and she already had two children. She got to prison but then they scaped and returned to her parents as they didn't have any money to survive. They forgave her and received her at home.
Well, I really enjoy romantic stories with unexpected endings. I was totally surprise when Lady Harcourt confessed that Eliza was her real daughter. I also realize hoy important is the money, in her case mostly when you have children and nobody supports you. Eliza was very brave of taking care of them and trying to suceed in life despite all that had happened to her.

Well, Eliza was the "adopted daughter" of Mr. George and Lady Harcourt but one day when she was 18 they discovered that her Eliza had stole a banknote of 50 £ and her benefactors turned her out of door.
Then appears Mrs. Wilson who is a friend of Eliza and she is described like the most amiable creature on earth and she wrote a letter to the Duchess of that time to receive Elize in her family and she aceptted.
Duchess and Eliza had a really good friendship and also the Duchess had a good friendship with Lady Harriet that she considered her to be like a sister for Eliza.
One day when The duchess and Lady Harriet went to an assembly Mr. Cecil, the lover of Lady Harriet, and Eliza stayed alone and when the Duchess and Lady Harriend returned they found a ltter saying, "We are married & gone" and it was signed by Henry Cecil and Eliza Cecil.
As soon as the Duchess finished reading the letter she told guards to bring them alive or death and they both whent to France for 3 years and they had 2 boys but unfortunately Henry Cecil dies and Eliza become a person with no money, a poor person because all their saving had stayed where her adopted parents lived and when she went ther guards captured her and her two sons and put all of the in the jail. She tried to find a escape and she did, a little hole where she and her sons fit in.
When they finally got out of there they decided to ask for money on the train and there she saw Lady Harcourt and there she was apologizing for have stolen the banknote and Mr George said: How couldn't i forgive you if you are my daughter. She couldn't believe what she was hearing and at the end Eliza and her 2 boys went to her parent's house to live and stay.
I really like the story, it was interesting ! (:

ReplyDeleteAs Sir George and Lady Harcourt were doing the labours of their Haymakers, suddenly they look a girl less than 3 months old, she was beautiful for them and they were delighted with the way she answered the questions so they decided to take her home , because they do not have any children
The girl was admired, until she was eighteen years because she was detected in stealing, consequently she was turned out of doors by her adoptive parents. However, she went to her most intimate friend, Mrs Wilson , after she listened to Eliza´s misfortune and that she wish of getting into some family, Mrs Wilson wrote a letter to the Duchess requesting her to receive Eliza into her family . Fortunately, the Duchess was pleased with her, she present her to Lady Harriet because she was like her sister.
Mr. Cecil was engaged with Lady Harriet , but then he declared his love to Eliza , she accepted him and they wrote a letter to the Duchess telling her they were married so she sent out after them armed men .
Cecil and travel to France if not they would suffer the wickedness of the Duchess. Later Eliza became a widow and without any financial support, being conscious of the derangement in their affairs, she sailed for England with her kids ,but as soon as she was seized by the officers of the Duchess and conducted to a gate for the reception of her own prisoners. She escaped until she could finally displace the bar of the cell but one to which she fastened the ladder. Immediately, they parted and they decided to go with Sir George and Lady Harcourt so she returned to that home which she had been absent nearly four years. Finally, she raised an Army which demolished the Dutchess and for this reason she gained the blessings and applause of thousands of people.
In my personal opinion this ending was unexpected I mean she was really a brief person because she act in a way that most of the people want so she was the only one who can do this and also she establish in a family so that was something good because she was proud of herself

ReplyDeleteThe book “Henry and Eliza” has a plot that is very common in live, and if it does not happen between siblings, it happens between friends, or other relatives.
This all starts when Eliza was found by Sir George and Lady Harcourt. They decided to adopt her, and take a lot of care of her. Everything was fine, they had a good live, but things got bad when all of a sudden they detected that Eliza had stolen a banknote of 50£. She was turn out of doors by her benefactors.
Mrs. Wilson helps her to find a home, although Eliza knew that it had to be crazy family that will have adopt her, because she had just committed a crime.
Even though what she did, Mrs. Wilson found a family for her, the Dutchess, that considered taking her, to be part of the family because their daughter, Lady Harriet, was engaged to Henry, a handsome young man, who had a big fortune and they were near their marriage.
There was BIG problem in this family, Henry and Eliza where in love, so they decided to escape to France, where they lived three years, and had two children. At the same time, the Dutchess send various men to kill them.
After what had happen Henry died, and Eliza was captured by those men. She escaped, and got back to Sir George and Lady Harcourt. Lady Harcourt told them both, that Eliza was their real daughter, but she kept that secret from him, because she knew, he wanted a son, not a daughter, so she pretended to find her.
I find it very interesting, except for the facts that, Lady Harcourt, never told the truth before, and every one should know, who their real parents are. And it’s not reason enough to say that because the father didn’t want a daughter they should leave her. Also I don’t like the fact, that Eliza was very welcome in this new family, and I think that she should had been more careful, so Henry and her, could be just friends. But if I put myself on her shoes, is also true, that you don’t manage who you fall in love with, and sometimes, those feelings can get out of control, although she could have created a space between them. I really loved this story, because of the plot, I really enjoy reading it.

The amiable woman wrote a letter to the Duchess telling about Eliza, they acceded. Her daughter was about to marry Henry, but he finally fell in love with Eliza.
She became mother of two boys. with no money, She managed to escape caring for her 2 children. When she spent all the scanty money in unnecessary things, she began getting hunger.As she was on a poor possition she was looking for charity in some Inn, thats when she found Lady Harcourt and Sir George.
Henry died and Eliza ran out of money.So she decided to retur to England but what she did not know was that the Duchess found her trying to escape so they took her to prision,But it doesn´t pass a lot of time in order to Eliza finding a way of escape at prison Eliza found some tools to opened the gate and escape.
To make some money she sold some of her stuff, when she ran out of money again she decided to go back to Sir George and Lady Harcourt’s house, they forgive her and ask her to come back with her children.
I found this book really interesting. The way that Eliza behave without importing the problems that she have in the course of her live make us think about the easy he easy thing that can be our live sometimes.But I am not in favour of her behavior either.

ReplyDeleteThe story begging when Sir George and Lady Harcourt decided to adopt Eliza. She was educated with values and virtues, and he was very clear what things were bad. They were a normal and happy family until the age of 18 when they discovered that Eliza had stolen 50£ so her parents threw her out of her house.
She went to her friend Mrs. Wilson. She was a friend of the Duchess and sent her a letter asking if she could take Eliza as her daughter because her daughter was already next to marries. The Duchess accept the proposition.
The duchess's daughter was called Lady Harriet, she would marry Mr. Cecil.
But when Eliza started to live at the Duchess house Mr. Cecil and she began to spend much time together. He fell in love with her.
One day the Duchess and her daughter went to a meeting. Eliza and Mr. Cecil left a note that said "Madam we are married & gone. Henry and Eliza Cecil"
The Duchess immediately sent guards to bring them but did not find them. They were traveling to France were there for three years and they had two children.
Mr. Cecil died and she had to return to England to support their children.
When officers arrived they found the Duchess was captured and taken to prison.
In prison she managed to go through tunnels and escaped. Eliza had to find a way to survive and started selling things and he met with Sir George and Lady Harcourt.
They had discovered that Eliza was not his adopted daughter was his daughter's biology that they had abandoned, because his father wanted a boy. Eliza finally able to live with his parents and two children
I liked the story as two people who love each other can live happily even though they have others who try to separate them, although in this case was a forbidden love, I found very interesting this story.

She had the perfect life (until she was 18 years old) she had the love of Lady Harcourt, she was adored by Sir George and admired by the entire world. Her life in less words was AMAZING!...that's why she was a little bit bad-mannered.
For her stealing a banknote of 50£ it was good so she did it, in consequence of that she was turned outdoors by her inhuman Benefactors.
Then she took the road to a small market town where it was her intimate friend, Mrs. Wilson.
Mrs. Wilson wrote a letter to the Duchess saying that Eliza was a young woman of unexceptionable character, who was good as to choose in her Society in preference to going to Service.
When Eliza met the Duchess, they get along really good, and then the Duchess introduced her to Lady Harriet.
Mr. Cecil, who was the lover of Lady Harriet, spent a lot of time with Eliza and they fell in love, so they decided to escape.
So the Duchess started the vengeance and people started looking for Eliza and Cecil.
They went to France and had 2 children, but unfortunately Mr. Cecil died so Eliza became a single mother.
Then she was captured by the people who were looking for her and they imprisoned her so she escaped because she was passing through terrible situations there.
When she escaped, while she was walking she met her adopted parents and when the parents saw her, they started talking about her and Lady Harcourt told Sir George that they were her biological parents so they decided to forgive her about the robbery she committed.
When they were reconciled, Eliza and her 2 children returned to that home from which she had been absent nearly for years
No sooner she raised an Army which entirely demolished the Duchess’s Newgate and by that act she gained the Blessings of thousands of people.

Jane Austen was an out-standing novelist during the Regency. Jane Austen's works were critiziced because of the sensibility during the eighteenth century and are part of the transition to nineteenth-century realism.[4][C] Her plots, though fundamentally comic,[5] highlight the dependence of women on marriage to secure social standing and economic security] . The strongest influences on her writing, her works are concerned with moral issues.
She lived during the Regency period. It was known because of the elegance and achievements in the fine arts and architecture. This era encompassed a time of great social, political, and even economic change. I was a tough time for women, they were considered decoration; men were only interested in their money and not in women’s values. Moreover, by this period all the people were vey superficial, the appearance only counted. However, Jane Austen was different; she wanted to find the real love…
Henry and Eliza is a playful and some what unsophisticated short piece from Jane Austen's Juvenilia, it is said it was may be writen while she was a teenager. The names "Henry" and "Eliza" come from her favorite brother Henry Austen, and his cousin and future wife Eliza de Feuillide.
Everything starts when Sir George and Lady Harcourt found beneath the thick foliage of a Haycock, a beautiful girl not more than 3 months old. They both decided to adopt her and take care of her as their own daughter. They taught her lots of values and gave her all the love she needed. Eliza becomes accustomed to live inside a perfect world in which she was the centre. She was so conceited that one day she steals a banknote of 50£ and she continued living proud of herself.
When this noticed reaches her parent’s ears, she goes to a friend’s market in order to find her “new family”. Her friend, Mrs. Wilson, writes a letter with this request to the Duchess of F. When she first meets Eliza, they get on really well. So well, that the Duchess decides to introduce her daughter, Lady Harriet. Lady Harriet and Eliza become so close to each other that she considered her as a “sister”. However, this lovely relationship breaks up when Eliza meets Lady Harriet lover, Mr. Cecil, they fall in love with each other and they decide to escape and get married.

As soon as the Duchess of F. and Lady Harriet find out the news, they sent 300 armed men with orders not to return without their bodies, dead or alive.
ReplyDeleteIn the mean time, Cecil and Eliza go to France and she gives birth to 2 boys. Unfortunately, Eliza becomes a widow without anything to support either her or her children. She decides to go to England but sooner she steps with the officers of the Duchess and they take her and her children to a cell. There, she plans how to escape. She has the idea to go out through the window with the help of a ladder, but her children are too young so she throws them and she went after them.
Time passes and she begins to find herself rather hungry, so she decides to return to her old friends, Sir George and Lady Lacourt. All of a sudden, she fixes her eyes on the Lady and they recognize her.
In that moment, Lady Harcourt realizes she is not the adopted one, she is the real one. Sir George does not understand and Lady Harcourt explains to him that while he was out, she was already breeding wand when she gave birth to her daughter she hides her beneath a Haycock.
Without doubting, Eliza and her two children return to a comfortable life. Then Eliza raises and Army and she is applauded by everyone again.
Well miss, after reading the story I really have to say I do like it, because it was really easy to read. It made me laugh in some parts and doubt in others. I like how she reflects the image of a mother when she describes Lady Harcourt and I didn’t like that much the ending because it doesn’t seem true. I mean, after going through all this obstacle she finally returns to her old life and gains the applauses of everyone? I hard to believe as life is not that easy!

ReplyDeleteWell, I wanted to know more things about Jane Austen because she is one of my favourite writers I totally love her work and I believe she is an intelligent person who wanted to make people see that novels were not rubbish.
We can also see that her work was during the Regency period there was extravagance in everything, from costume, architecture, gardens, entertainment, art, etc. It was one of the most civilised and prosperous periods in British history. This era, now classified as the Regency period, had made significant contributions in terms of literature. Gothic romance and gothic literature enjoyed a surge in interest in this period with many authors, such as Jane Austen.
Jane Austen’s artistic apprenticeship lasted from her teenage years until she was about thirty-five years old. During this period, she experimented with various literary forms, and it’s her realism and biting social commentary that have cemented her historical importance as a writer.
Even though sometimes her plots are comic, they highlight the dependence of women on marriage with a secure social standing and economic security. Her books have similarities with Samuel Johnson ones as he was one of her strongest influences; they both are concerned with moral issues.
Unfortunately, all her effort only make her gain a little fame between the literary elite and has some few positive results. However, when her nephew published ‘A Memoir of Jane Austen’ she started to gain more public that quickly were interested in her work. It is by the1940’s when she become widely accepted as a great English writer and is some years after that we can see more aspects in her novels: artistic, ideological and historical.
It is one of her first writings called Juvenilia, which is presumed to have been written when she was a teenager, that is a recompilation of her poems, stories and plays. It is here, where we can find ‘Henry and Eliza’. She came out with these names because of her favourite brother Henry Austen and his cousin future wife, Eliza de Feudille.
The story starts when Sir George and Lady Harcourt find a little girl who was about three months, lying in the foliage of haycock. They were charmed and as they didn’t have any children of their own, they decided to keep her and take her home with them. As the time pass by, they have brought her up with virtues and ethical rules. It was because of this that people became amused every time they saw her.
Despite, all the standards of behaviour they had taught her, when she was eighteen she stole a banknote of 50£. However this didn’t change the way she looked at herself and continued being satisfied with the way she was.
When her parents discovered her, they kicked her out of the house leaving her without anything. That’s when she went to visit a good friend of her called Mrs. Wilson, who immediately after hearing Eliza’s story accepted to look her for a family and wrote a letter to the Duchess, she immediately accepted as she has been recommended by a close friend of hers. When she was introduced there, she realized the Duchess had a daughter called Lady Harriet but they soon became close friends and considered sisters because they get along very well and trusted each other.

Nevertheless, Lady Harriet was engaged to a rich man, Mr Cecil, and as he spent all the day in that house he got to spend the day with Eliza too. It just took some days for them to fall in love with each other and one day, taking advantage that the Duchess and Lady Harriet had gone out, they got married and run away from the country. They spent their life in France for three years but unfortunately, Henry died and Eliza had to support herself and her two children so she thought it was better to travel to Dover. And as soon, as they were there she was sent to prison.
ReplyDeleteOnce there, she started to look for an easy way of going out but there was no one, so she escaped with the help of ropes and a ladder. After escaping, she decided to sell some of their clothes so they could have some money but even though her effort they started to feel hungry and that’s when she decided to appeal to the generosity of Sir George and Lady Harcourt.
When she arrived there and saw them, she tried to explain them her situation. However, as a total surprise, Lady Harcourt realises that she was not their adopted daughter but their real one as she started to remember what had happen when her husband went to America. Sir George was surprise with the news and as she was their own daughter he forgave her and since then they lived ‘happily ever after’.
From my point of view, I must say that it was a really interesting and hilarious story. For instance it was really funny that Lady Harcourt didn’t remind she had a daughter and she didn’t recognize her when she saw her in the same place she had left her. Also, it was obvious, that the door was locked and the window was barred if it hadn’t been that was then it would not be a prison.
On the other side, I don’t believe it is right that after doing all those bad things, Eliza was rewarded and had her normal life as anything had ever happened. In my opinion, what this story wanted to teach us is that every action or decision we make will have consequences in our life in the near or far future, but it will have.
To sum up, I have to end saying that we can easily find out the aspects from the regency period. A representative case will be the way of writing, as in this period of time it was very popular the gothic literature which she was very interested in. Also the image that her work shows has led to a revival of this period. In addition, we can see that this story is the type of Regency romance.

She was in the middle of a difficult situation because she didn’t have the necessary resources to keep them, apart from that, we don’t have to forget that the Duchess was looking for her and if they found her perhaps she would go to prison. With no other choice, she decided to return with her adoptive parents.
During her journey, she was captured but she escaped, not immediately but she did it. Unfortunately, she had to walk even she didn’t know where she was; meanwhile this story is showing us how a person can face the misfortunes with intelligence, our protagonist finally arrived to the place where she grew up and if Mrs Harcourt and Eliza were connected with their minds, they found each other.
At the beginning it was a little confusing even though the message is clear. For me, what she is trying to show us is that we are the only ones who can make whatever we want and that our acts have consequences. It doesn’t matter if what we’ve done is good or bad, everything has a consequence and we make our own destiny.
There are some things which belong to the Regency Period:
For example, the topic of the money is present; we know that they were passing through a difficult period and it’s very clear in the story, another fact is the power and the influence that the aristocracy had and last but not least, how women were ignored by everyone, I mean, men were considered in everything and our protagonist had to fight with all the prejudices and things weren’t easy for her jus because she was a female.
From my point of view, Eliza was a person who had the chance to demonstrate that if we want something we can get it, with a lot of effort but no matter what, we can not bring us down.

ReplyDeleteBefore I start, I want to say that I liked this novel since the beginning. The first time I read it, I was impressed, it’s a very interesting novel and it’s very easy to read.
In the class you told us that if we had any questions, we can put it in here and you’ll answer, and I think that’s great, because I have a question: I knew that Henry was Jane´s brother, and Eliza his wife, but I couldn’t understand, why Henry is so relevant, I mean he only appear for a second in the novel, and he´s not as important as Eliza, and the whole story is not about them, so why that title, why not just “Eliza”?
Now, here is the plot:
The story starts when Sir George and Lady Harcourt found a little girl lying closely the thick foliage of a Haycock. They name her Eliza, she was a very admirable girl with a noble and exalted mind.
Everything was happiness around her, but at the age of 18, she was detected in stealing a banknote of 50£. Nothing happened to her because of her excellence. She was turned out of doors by her benefactors.
A kind lady, Mrs. Wilson, wrote a letter to the Duchess of F. requesting to take care of Eliza. The Duchess accepted pleased and she introduced her to her daughter, Lady Harriet. She considered her as her sister.
Mr. Cecil and Lady Harriet were a couple, but a mutual love aroused between Henry and Eliza. They got married, but no one knew about that.
When the Duchess found out, they had already escaped, full with anger, she sent 300 armed men to follow and bring them.
They remained 3 years in France and they had two boys. She became a widow, and she didn’t had anything to support her or her children.
The Duchess’s officers found Eliza and they took her. When she escaped from the prison she decided to return with Sir George and Lady Harcourt.
They received her with wide open arms, and Lady Harcourt told Sir George all the truth about Eliza. The true story was that Eliza wasn’t their adoptive daughter, she was their real daughter.

ReplyDeleteI’m going to tell you the plot of Henry and Eliza by Jane Austen:
Sir George and Lady Harcourt discovered a little girl not more than 3 months old in the floor. They decided to educate her with care and cost. When she grew up, she was the delight of all who knew her.
At the age of eighteenth she was detected stealing a banknote of 50 pounds so she was turned out of doors. Although she felt sad she started to sing under a tree. Some hours later, she went to the Red Lion in which place her most intimate friend, Mrs. Wilson. She wrote a letter to the Duchess of F telling her to receive into her family a young woman, Eliza.
Mrs. Wilson introduced her to Lady Harriet, who was so much pleasant with her appearance. Mr. Henry Cecil, the lover of Lady Harriet was often with Eliza so he convinced her to get married. So one night when The Duchess and Lady Harriet went to a meeting they take the opportunity to get married. When Lady Harriet knew that, she sent out after them 300 armed men to return with their bodies.
Eliza and Henry stayed in France 3 years, in that time they had 2 children. Days after, Eliza got widow. Immediately, Eliza went to England in a boat of War of 55 Guns. There she was catch by the officers of the Duchess.
When Eliza got out of it, she sold her clothes to buy food and toys for her children. With that experience she decided to return with her old friends, Sir George and Lady Harcourt. So she had to walk 40 miles, when she had already walked 30 mile she found the Entrance of a Town, in which she had good times. She stayed there to ask for some money. One car parked and she went to do her work, when she looked the face of the woman, she was Lady Harcourt. In that moment, Lady Harcourt revealed a secret; it was that Eliza was her daughter.
Well, I like very much this story because some parts were very strange like the part when Eliza sang under the tree but I don’t like so much the end because I expect that it isn’t true at all.

ReplyDeleteHenry and Eliza is a story writen by jane austen in the xviiith century, she used to write about the woman in that society and her stories were usually about fobbiden love.
Henry and Eliza is a great example for this.
The story begins when sir George and Lady Harcourt finds a beautiful baby and as they didnt have any children they adopt her and call Eliza.
They taugh her the love of virtue and the hatred of vice, in which they succceded as when Eliza grew up everyone was delighted when they met her.
But unfortunately when she was 18 years old, she was acussed of sealing a banknote of 50£,for this reason she was turned out of doors so she decided to go to her friend Mrs. Wilson, the kindest creature on earth, to ask if she could find a home for her. Mrs Wilson wrote a letter to the Dutchess of F asking her if she could take care of Eliza, and whe the Dutchess read the letter she accepted and received Eliza with a hug.
She presented Eliza to Lady Harriet who was commited to Henry Cecil but when Eliza and Henry met they fell in love and decide to escape.
Later Henry dies and Eliza with her two children got caught by the Dutchess guards and were sent to prision, Eliza find a way to escape and decide to return to Ldy Harcourt who forgives her as she was her real daughter.
I really liked the story because is very romantic and i think that Eliza is a very nice and intelligent character.

ReplyDeleteWell, I like the novel very much, as it shows that for love, humans can do everything, even if it is not correct, because you only want to be with the person you love. At first I found the reading a little bit difficult, because of the vocabulary, but when I read it again and look the words in the dictionary I understood it completely.
The plot of Henry and Eliza: Sir George and Lady Harcourt found Eliza closely to a thick foliage of a Haycock. She was three months and was absolutely beautiful, so they decided to adopted her as they did not have any children. She was raised with principals and values, and was the delight of all who knew her. Even though she was raised that way, when she was 18, she stole a banknote of 50 pounds. Her parents could not believe it and with no other solution, they kicked her out of their house.
After that, she went to a friend’s house to tell her about her missfortune. She helped Eliza by sending a letter to the Dutchess, and telling her if Eliza could be part of her family. The Dutchess accepted.
The Dutchess had only one daughter called Lady Harriet, who was engaged with a very rich man, Henry. Eliza and Henry falled deeply in love, at the point they ran away to France because they married. The Dutchess was so angry that send 300 armed men to looked for them.
Eliza and Henry had 2 kids, and they lived of Henrys income. Unfortunately, he was killed and Eliza captured. But she scaped and returned to her old family. At the end, the three of them realized Eliza was not her adopted child, she was her real child. The situation was that Lady Harcourt got pregnant but dumped her children at the haycock because Sir George only wanted a boy.

Henry and Eliza:
The story takes place in Haycock, when Lady Harcout found a baby, Eliza, ad she takes care of her as she was her daughter. Until she was eighteen and she was found stealing a banknote of 50 euros and she was turned out of doors by her benefactors.
After that, she went to Mrs. Wilson to ask her for help. And she wrote a letter asking the duchess of F. to take Eliza as one of her daughters. And the duchess delighted accepted.
After a few days the duchess decided to introduce Eliza to her daughter and her fiance, Henry. When Henry and Eliza met they inmediatly fell inlove.
One day the duchess and her daughter decided to go for a walk together and when they came back they found a Henry and Eliza's note saying that they've run away together and that they were married. The duchess started shouting their names and told her soldiers to look after them. and to bring them death.
Eliza and Henry ran together to france and two children. Time later Henry died and His family remained in bankruptcy. Eliza decided to go back to England and the dutchess found her and put her in jail.
She scaped from jail and decided that she was going to ask for charity. When she got into a train she found out that Lady harcout and Sir george were there. She got surprised when she heard lady harcout telling her she was her biological daughter. They forgave her for the robbery and they all lived together forever :)
I liked the story cuz it had a hapy ending :D
Yesterday I saw the movie you gave and I loved it but I was waiting for the kiss and it never happened!

Sir George and Lady Harcourt found in the floor, a beautiful girl, she was approximately 3 months. They decided to take care of her and tried not to have other children. Also they let her knew about Love, which was a virtue for them.
When Eliza, the beautiful girl, was 18 years old, she stole 50 pounds, so she had turned out of door; in spite of this she decided to have fun, sat under a tree and started singing.
Later she went to the “Red Lion”; there she met a close friend, Mrs Wilson, who helped her to make a letter to Duchess of F. The Duchess was very esteem by Eliza, so she accepted Eliza at her palace. They met at Mrs. Wilson.
Henry, Lady Harcourt’s lover, fell immediately in love with Eliza, so he proposed her to get married. One night, when the Duchess and Lady Harriet went to a meeting, Henry and Eliza take the opportunity to get married at the moment. When Lady Harriet notice what was happened, she immediately sent out 300 armed men, to return with the two bodies.
After 3 years, Henry and Elizabeth were parents of 2 children, but months later, Henry died, so that made Eliza a widow. Eliza went to England, but it wasn’t satisfactory for her, because hours later she was captured by Duchess’ officers.Eliza had to scape, so she did. She had to sell all her clothes to give something to her children to eat.
Eliza decides to returned, she knew that she had to walk 40 miles. In the 2nd mille a car stopped, there were George and Lady Harcourt, Eliza recognized them. They invite Eliza another children to entered to the car because the wanted to talk to her. They told her, she was their biology daughter.
In conclusion, I find the story relay interesting; it was like that kind of soap operas that you want to know the final immediately, but also I find silly when Eliza sing, the lyrics was it, but I let you know that was quite difficult for me to read this story.
