Lord George Gordon Byron

A spirit before me is a poem that made me think about how fragil and immortal we are. What this poem made you think about?

  1. For me, the poem is about the fear that human beings have about things they don't know how to explain it, like the ghost.

  2. Hi Miss,
Well, this poem made me think many things. One of theme is what you think. That we are so fragil that a spirit can beat us. Also I think that his childhood is reflected here in the poem. Because he was rejected he was taken to a boarding school, his mother was a bipolar person so he thought that he was nothing. Here I think that te spirit is his conscience telling him he is of clay that he was an habitat in the dust like he says in the poem. Also he is questioning the power of God in creating all mankind.
Apart from that I think that he was vary creative and he had an excellent imagination.

  3. The poem made mi think about how do humans feels in front of divinity (God, Angels, etc.), so useless and small, so impure and unnecessary, and also as if we feel that we can not see how much do we have around us.
It also made me think about how weak do we feel in front of a spirit/ghost. We can not even speak or move in front of something that we can't even explain neither with science nor with fantasy.

  4. This poem made think about dealing with internal demons because maybe it try to say that in the time he was writing the poem he was dealing with too many problems and that spirit could be his fight beetween good and bad. And also in the poem is mention that he was very afraid with that may be he is trying to said that she is afraid to failed.

this poem is questioning the power of God in creating all mankind. however it is also questioning the rule of mankind's rule over the earth today.

  6. Hi miss,

Well, in fact, his poem is really controversial. Obviously the plot is difficult to understand, but as we read, we start to think in the way it shows us many things.

For example, I'm pretty sure that this poem is questioning God's existance and also how it influences in us.
In the part he talks to a spirit, this one is making a curious comparison between humanity and a moth, saying that it lives longer than us. And if we look it in a different perspective, it's true.

It makes me think about how, sometimes, we are intimidated by the unknown things and everything that has no explication for us. Because we always think that every single thing in this world has a logical or science explanation, but we are wrong.

We don't know anything compared to the new world we don't know yet.

    Many many many kisses,
    Ana Claudia.

  7. Hello Miss,

First of all I don't agree with him in the way that we are dust or clay, but I think that his education plays an important role here, and that is why he thinks this way.

Taking in consideration the first paragraph, he might have thought that we, humans, are nothing in front of God, even though he questions his existance. That is why we can also notice the different ways we can feel infront of spirits or something which is not commun and has no explanation for us, or at least we can not find its explanation.

  9. Hello Miss,

Well,I think that the poem express alot of thinks, first of all about the question of God and the role that the humans have to do in the word,he compare us with a moth and that say much about what he thonk of the humans.

the poem said too about the spirits and who we be if we saw one, the poem relative was a question, about what we do in the world so i think he write it for take care of our selves.

  10. Hi miss,

Well i'll begin saying that this poem made me think a lot as it was difficult to understand, and also because it was completely different of what we have been seeing.

I have no doubt that he is questioning the power and the existence of God.
In the poem he is showing us how afraid and intimidated we can be infront of things that we don't know or we are not familiar with, and also with situations that has no explanation for science or logic.

I must say that i don't agree with the way he thinks about us, humans, because for me it is degrading the way he compares us with a clay and a moth, even though sometimes, as I mention before we are so afraid of unknowed things that we almost feel like a clay.

  11. Hi miss,
Well, “A spirit passed before me” caught my attention the first time we read it in class, it is written in iambic pentameter and has couplet rhyme.
To start, this poem made me think about Gods rules, I mean, if human beings are created in God's image, why are we mortal? why are we dust compared to him?
After I analyze it several times, I believe it has something to do with his life. He had a difficutl childhood (he had club foot, her mother was bipolar, he was sexual abused by her nurse and her father died when he was very young). Maybe with all this problems, at the society he feels he is nobody, he is afraid to do something wrong and do not want to fail.
I can conclude that man had always felt that he is less than divinity, as he had no logical explanation about ghosts, spirits, angels, God, etc.

  12. Hi Miss,

Well, actually the first time I read this poem I didn't understand it totally, but in the second read, I realized what was the real sense of the poem.

In this poem, Byron tries to describe human beings as inferior creatures compared to God (he compared human beings with clay, dust and moth)
and he considered God as a superior creature (he mentioned how powerful God could be). Also, the fact that human beings feel frightened and intimidated with "the spirit", shows his inferiority.

From this, I could deduce that his works were influenced by his education and his childhood, as he had suffered a lot: he has been sexually abused by his nurse, he had a default and that's why he received the rejection of the people, his mother was bipolar, and he lost his father when he was very young. All of these, had influenced in his self-esteem, and that's why he felt like in his poem, like a dust.

I really don't agree with the poem. Although I know how powerful is God and also i know that we are not perfect creatures, i don't consider myself as dust, but I know that many people could feel like that, as it happened to Byron.

Well for me to read this poem was a doubt situation ,beacuse i sit down and think who i am , if god create us or if there is someone somewhere who realy exist but humanity dont know, did od have the power or not ? anyway my faith is bigger than my doubts so until now i still believe in god ,also in ghost.

  15. Hi miss,

In my opinion "A Spirit Passed Before Me" is a poem that shows that George Lord Byron has a lot of imagination, we also noted how he is questioning the power and the existence of God, and how he compares it with men.
Finally I think that maybe he is afraid of the phamtom because he describes with mamy details the moment of its appearance.

  16. Hi Miss,

This poem is really interesting and complex. I have to say also that he was very creative and he had a very big imagination to do his poems. After analyzing it I came to understand what was the real significance of the poem and how related was it with his childhood.

In the poem there is no doubt that he is questioning the power of God in creating all mankind, as he said that human beings are no more than dust and he is comparing us to a moth. He is also showing his inferiority when he says that human beings feel intimidated with the spirits. As you said he is trying to show us how fragil we are.

As I said before this poem was influenced by his childhood and education. He had a really difficult childhood, that’s why he suffered a lot. His father died when he was very young, his mother was bipolar, he was sexually abused by his nurse who took advantage of him because of his default (club foot) and many other things make him feel really bad.

I have to say that his poems are just unique and I’m very surprise how he related what he lived and managed to put all those feelings in his poem.

  17. Hi, miss!

For me, tha poem says, in other words that human beings are nothing.

I think that, as Byron loved to travel, and he can compare the human life styles from many parts of the world in that way, he may had think that, without the differences of the cultures, we still being the same, with no power to do what we would like to do.

Personally, this poem makes a direct reference to death, and that human power can't stop it. AS we know, one day we are here and the other we are not,and if God (the being that created humans and that made them mortal) is a little more than nothing (in a relation when god is more than us), because he can't made us inmortal beings.

Also, I believe that this was like a way to say to his contemporaneans that they were nothing, like making everybody an invitation to the "relaxed moraly" life style that he had, making present the thought that life is too short to be lived, and as there is nothing after it, we had to lived it in the way we like and without any moral prevention.

I think that's all for now.

  18. Hi miss,

This poem talks about that inmortal and superior part of human beings, which makes us think, which makes us meditate for a second and analyse about what we are doing and what is happening around us, something called conscience.

I believe that if he's comparing us to clay with God, it's like if I dont't believe in God, somewhere on me shouts and says who are you (clay) to think or even question the power of God.

Then, what the poem is trying to explain, it's not that we are nothing, it's that we are no one to judge, to believe we are superior, or to pretend that we have that power capable of everything.

Well, for me, the poem reflects a bit of big regret of a serious action done by byron, and his coscience answers him with those words. It makes me think about a murder someway. Then: is man more just than God? or more pure...?, so who are you to decide someone's life.

    That's my opinion :S

  19. Hello Miss,

The poem “ A spirit passed before me” is a poem that questions the existence of God ,his power and also the things that he created , as we can see in it Byron try to show us the existence of an spirit, a spirit that is superior than us , that is why this phrase “Along my bones the creeping flesh did quake” , it reflects the fear that we, the humans, feel or maybe even intimidated when we are in front of a spirit or something that we know that is superior. For me his education influenced a lot in his work because he had his own ideas about the society where he had grown, is a poem about the relation between God and humans, so as we know he was a protestant.

  20. Hi miss,

First of all, I must say that I felt totally amused when reading the poem.

Lord Byron didn’t have an easy life because of he was born with a club-foot and became extreme sensitivity about his lameness, his mother was bipolar, he father died when we has young and the nurse who took care of him abused from him; but despite that for me his way of writing was amazing. He was involved with the romanticism and at the same time he wrote satires.

About his poem called “A spirit passed before me” it’s important to take notice of the different interpretations that can be making.
Firstly, I believe he contrasts us with god. He says we are almost nothing in comparison to him.

Personally, I don’t agree with him because we are supposed to resemble God as he was the one who create us.

What is more, he expresses how afraid we can be of things we cannot explain, of things we don’t know certainly, even from God himself.

Apart from that, he also seems to be frightened of the spirit as he mentioned that he was trembling.

All in all, I understand that all these complains about God’s power and mankind’s rule over the Earth are due to his hard life.

Well, I must cut off now.. take care miss.

  21. I think that the poem tries to make us think about how we overvalue ourselfs. The human being is so selfish that we usually don't see how insignificant we are. But, when we face with the divine, we realize that we are just one piece of dust in this universe.

  22. It make me think in so many thinks, at first I thought he was against god, but then I realized he was defending him and tried to show how we as human beings are under Him, and actually is kind of true because we can not be compered with God eventhought we were created as a resemble. Also he show how people can be afraid of things we can not normaly see, or explain.

I kind of like this poem because it shows that human beings are not perfect and we are not god, we have feeling like being afraid that God would not feel because he is powerful and he would never be on his knee infront of someone or something.

  23. This poem made me feel like if the person saying those things was somewhere between God and human race. It made me think this was said by a person completely foreign to everything that conforms this planet, spiritually and physically.

It made me feel like if people and God were a joke or something. And what's more interesting, it made me curious about what other things could a being that had nothing to do with our race, our beliefs and manners and our thoughts could think. The strange thing is that although it feels like this being had no relation with our human essence, it looks like if at the same time it had to have some link with us, some link with God to understand it all.

Ahm, I think what I just said is confusing and may be difficult to understand but I believe that's because that's how I really felt when I read it: confused. It also amazed me and made my imagination go to unexplored places in my mind.

Now that I think of it, maybe that was the purpose of the poem... to made us think about the role of God in our lifes and made our minds imagine something different, something new.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this poem :) I hope to find more poems like this one along the course.

    See you soon!

  24. this poem made me feel a little bit weird and made me hesitate about the reason why god created us, it's really strange you know? because if god is so powerful then why would he wanted to create criatures like us, that are destroying everything that he had created but the answer is : LOVE, I think that knows that there are people in this world that can make the difference and that's why he create us, of course he is more powerful than all of us but with this poem I felt happy because it showed me how important we are for him

Firstly, in this poem he is questioning the existence of God, his power that he had in front of everything and also of his mankind.

I could said that he is feeling intimidated of the situations that until the moment do not have any explanation, even scientific or logical.

I really do not agree with some thought that he had of human’s beings because he is comparing us with clay or dust, and this is maybe because of his education and experiences that he had when he was young , influenced him to feel inferior about some things.

To conclude, this poem make me reflect of the way how we assumed existance of things we have not seen but we believe.

In my opinion the poem is magnificent. Since I started to read the poem, I began to think: who was talking?. It is incredible how the spirit questioned everything. The poem made me feel different.
I think that the spirit questioned God and the life in the poem because Lord Byron as everyone want to know more about the creation and the power of God. It`s common that everyone want to investigate or questione about our world and life until now.

  28. Hi Miss:

I really don’t know what to think about this poem. Of course, I find it excellent and controversial and also it made think a lot.

The first thought that came into my mind was that he really hated humankind. I was like: How does he dare to make a comparison between us and a moth? It made me realize that he was a very brave man, but still I felt kind of mad and undeniably small and stupid for that comparison.

The thought that he may be right also crossed my mind. It is true indeed that we can be described as “creatures of a day” because we are mortal and many people die every day. The dust part is also true and it is described in the famous quote: “You are dust and you shall be dust”. If we analyze it from a scientific point of view, we are basically energy that must be returned to earth when we die.

He was very creative and he did a perfect job describing how humans feel about the spirits and the so called UNKNOWN THINGS and putting that into an “experience” of a man who had the chance to witness the glory and the vastness of god and realized how small we are.

So, I would definitely describe us as small compared to god, but I don’t think that we are as unworthy as he makes us feel.

In this poem Byron makes you analyze various things such as God's intervention in the creation of the world, make you doubts about the power of God that has on things.
Gives you the impression that he's afraid of the spirits may even feel intimidated.
In his poem compares us to a moth and says, "That we are no more than dust "

  30. Hi miss,

When I read this poem I really felt that Byron was so afraid of the spirit. Also it seems like he hated human beings, I think he hated people because of all the things he went through.

This poem also make me question the why God created us, if he knew that we would do all the things that we are doing now.Why he take the risk?

As I said I tried to understand why Byron was so mean with human beings and I get to the conclusion that was because of many things he had passed through all his life so I think if that would had happened to me I would hate humans as Byron hate them or even more.

Byron was a very intelligent and very creative, he was genius.

This poem is questioning God's existence, his power and compares the human being with. He thinks that we are Low beings and such a dust.

I think that it could be because of his past life that was not very good and he was sexually abused by his nurse, his mother was bipolar and his father dead when it was very young.

  33. For me, this poem tries to explain that God is the only one who can be great and humanity could not believe that is more than him.

For him we are not so important,I mean, we are only people that are always trying to find an answer to everything; looking for something that can explain us why are we here and for what.

I found this poem a little bit confusing, because Byron wrote as if God was criticizing humanity, which is incredible because He created us. Perhaps, he wanted to let us know that God was incapable to create something perfect -we were compare with insignificance things as dust and moth. It's not easy to understand it,the only thing I know is that we follow God wherever he may go beacuse as Byron said; we are less than him.

We are so fragile that we need to believe in something, we feel intimidated with the spirits and also death, which is silly because it won't hurt us, we only need to face those things which can create on us an awful feeling.

I really liked this poem although I don't know if the ideas I have inside my head are wrong or not. When I was reading it, immediately came to my mind the book "Metamorphosis" by Kafka. I'm not sure but I found the sense of the poem quite similar to the plot of that book(I felt like the main character for a moment before I could find the real meaning of it). Anyway, this poem made reflect a lot.

  34. Hi Miss Monica,

To begin with, I have to say that George Byron, had a very bad childhood, he had a club-foot,he's mother didn't help him with anything, she was bipolar, he's dad didn't exist in his live, and his nurse, was sexualy abusing of him.

In the poem "A spirit passed before me" we can say that it is written in iambic pentameter, and is also a couplet

It is about how Spirit questions rules in heaven, and how maybe God created us equal as him, but sometimes not everything fits in this jigsaw. There are always questions that are bothering our minds, for example if he made us as his resembles, why in comparison to him, we are just dust.

There are a lot of questions that go over, and over, our minds. And this poem reflects them.

Well Miss Monica, this is my opinion about this very interesting poem.

Well, when I read it the fist time, I didn't understand it but then I could realized what he was talking about.

First, he is talking about power of God, and how we(human beings) are in front of him(dust, clay and moth).

At the beginning I wasn't agree with that, because I know that God is the creator and he loves us and he is superior, but in the poem he is not talking just about that, he is degradating and humilating himself too.

But it is natural, because when he was younger he suffered a lot, so he felt like nothing

  40. Hi miss :)
Lord Byron had a particular personal magnetism. It obtained the reputation of not being conventional, being eccentric, polemic, ostentatious and controversial. Many have attributed his extraordinary capacities to a two-pole disorder, also known with the name of maniacal depression. He was always acid and cruel. He defended the unprivileged people’s rights and the miserable’s as well.

He always repeated to himself this phrase: "When a member weakens always there is other one that compensates it". He is one of the most well known writers and to me, he is wonderful because even though he had to go through many obstacles he never gave up and continued listening his heart.

And so he does in the poem which made me think more than once. It is a conversation between him and a divine ghost where the ghost starts to ask him questions about God to make him doubt or to defend his ideas. The ghost questions the fact that humans are nothing in comparison to God, and that we believe the opposite. Also, it talks about that our actions blind us and do not let us see the light of the wisdom.

To me, this is true. We believe we’re everything, the centre of the earth and we become more selfish each time and we only remember God existence when we need him.

    Thank you miss.

    Bárbara ♥

  41. Hi miss

Well actually I have to read this poem like 3 times to understand it but after it, the first thing that came to my mind is that we are just what we are, we are humans a we can't change it.

We can reflect what we think or what we are by words, in this case by a poem but we still being just a body with soul.

We can imagine or believe that we are the most important thing in this world, that we are invencible but when we realizes what we really are, we are very fragil, just like glass.

I've always thought that we are like a rose, the entire stem (our life) is full of thorns (obstacles), and when we reached the top (the flower) we trust and levae everything, so we can fall down and be as fragile as a petal.

Well when I read the poem , it made me think who humans beings are so little and fragile when we compare to God. In fact , Byron also mention this fact.
To me , he is saying that even though humans beings seems strong on the outside , in the inside we still believe in something bigger than just us , and how we accept that HE is better than everyone and we even kneel down to him.
A spirit passed before me , is cuestioning God's power , but not in a bad way , its more like he is making us realize how big and powerful is God, and how we are like dust.

  43. Hi miss,

I think that the education of Lord Byron was very important and also his childhood, he had suffered a lot he has been sexually abused, he had a default and that's why he received the rejection of the people.

In his poem we are considered insignificant in front of God, even so he questioned the power of God in creation.

The poem made me think how we can be influenced by events that have no explanation and if not they will not be believed at all beacause we think everything in this life must have a logical explanation.

    See you tomorrow,

  44. Miss Monica,

The poem "A Spirit passed before me" is about a person who started talking and questioning about our existence because he said that if we were created like God, why we are like that because we always do bad things, we lie, we kill, in less words we are like dust.
So he realized that God is like dust, he is something that is not useful, because we were created like Him.

What it is said in the poem, make sense right? But I think God have given us the liberty to make our own decisions, to choose what we want to do of our life and to choose what way we want to follow (the good one or the bad one).

In conclusion, this poem made me reflect on my own actions because we always need to try to be a better person everyday and we need to do good things to make God feel proud of us.

  45. Hi Miss Monica
To begin with i want to said something about Lord George Gordon Byron:
He was born on January 22 of 1788 and died in Missolonghi on April 19, 1824.

    About the poem:
It is about a spirit who passed in front of a person, and made him some questions, the spirit said that if we are the image and likeness of God, why we are different?, it means that in comparison with God we are like dust.

What i think about the poem:
Before reading the poem I had never stopped to think that if we were the likeness of God why we were so different?, and that remains an unfinished question for me.

  46. At first, this poem was kind of difficult to understand but it made me think about a side that we should discover and at a certain time of our life we face something that we may didn't knew that could exist. Something that is out of our reality.

In the second part he compares human with God and we can see that we are nothing compare to him.

  47. Hi miss,(:

Well, what i understood of "A spirit before me" is that Lord Byron was trying to say that God maybe made a mistake in creating us, maybe we are not good enough for being a creation of a powerful God because he is comparing us with dust and with that point of view i realized that we are a very fragile creation that, as he described in the beginning on the poem, he started to shake when a spirit pass in front of him, so there are more creations better than us that we have to show respect or be afraid of. Also i think that Lord Byron mentions this thing like something terrifying because he was afraid of it and he reflects this fear in the poem, i believe that could be death.

  48. Hi miss(:

He was a British Romantic poet and satirist and when I read this poem I was really confused because I didn’t know If he was talking about the power of god.

After that I tried to decipher what he wanted to say and I understood this poem is questioning the power of God in creating all mankind. however it is also questioning the rule of mankind's rule over the earth today.
"Is man more just than God? Is man more pure than he who deems even Saraphs insecure?"

  49. Hi miss,
Well, A spirit passed before me make me think about how insecure we could feel when we are in front of a creature unknown for us, human beings, that is maily challenging our faith in God. How much nervousness we could feel and with that all the signs that we could show to that strange creature, like the hair stiffened, the trembling or the creeping flesh.

In my opinion this is a really good poem that can make you think about our own lives and our faith in God.

    Hi miss,

For me this poem states that human beings are insignificants because he said we are like dust. We can die in any moment so easily. This is totally true and I believe he is very brave to tell us that in his poems.

Byron compares us to God because he said God is so powerful and we are so fragile. Also, I understood that he believed we are selfish and sometimes we think we are the centre of the world, however, compare to God, we are nothing.

    Hi Miss

I think that what Byron is trying to esplain is that humans are always hesitating about many things in the world and they are afraid of these things. For example of ghosts, we don´t know if this exists but althought we are not sure about their existance, we have fear of ghosts. Also of God we are always asking ourselfs in believing or not.

  52. Miss Monica,

The poem “A spirit passed before me” by Lord George Gordon Byron it`s about a spirit that questions the rules of God and also said that if we were created in the image and likeness of God why he is better than us?

I think this poem make some people think and doubt about the existence of God because if we were created in the image and likeness of him why we don`t have the power to create something like he did with the world?

In my opinion, if God is better than us, we should thank him because he gave us life and gives us the chance to choose if we do bad or good things.

  53. Hi Miss,

Lord Byron was an intelligent man so I didn’t get his poem at first. But then, I realized what he tried to express.

Maybe, the comparison between us, humans, and dust was a little severe because in my opinion we are not as unworthy as he described us, we might have our flaws but we are still valuable.

From a different point of view, it makes sense because we usually think we are the best and do as we please, but when we have to face something more powerful, we feel like nothing.

That is why Byron is questioning our existence, in the sense of why God created some insignificant beings like us. He knows that there are other creatures superior to us, like the ghost he mentions.

Some day when we die at last, we will return to what we were, dust. So we must be conscious of the opportunity we have been given to make good things in this world.

    Hope you get better,
    Thirza

  54. Hi miss (:

I think that Byron's poem "A spirit passed before me" it's about a spirit that starts questioning the heaven rules and what are the humans compared to God: Just dust and clay. I think that the spirit wanted to communicate that God is omnipotent and superior than us, that he can decide our destiny and our future.

Maybe the spirit decided to appear, because the human beings were getting appart from God, because they thought that they were better than him, and that they could do anything, they thought that they were able to do whatever they wanted. They started to recognize the human being as the centre of the world, and went away from God.
I think that the mission of the spirit was to make the humans understand that the weren't complete without their creator

    Take care (:

  56. Hi Miss Mónica,

First of all, when I read the poem once, I didn't get it, so I had to read it three or four times, so I could understand it, so little by little it caught my attention.

Well: "A spirit passed before me" try to tell us is that human being is frequently scared of things that we couldn’t see and also explain (mainly talking about about ghosts), although, the only thing we have to be scared from alive people. Have you ever heard people saying: "You don't have to be scared of death people, otherwise you have to be scared of the alive ones"

In the second part, it says that God is powerful and superior, and when it compares between God and us, they describe as if we were fragile and "little things" as a “moth”.

To conclude, I’m really keen on this poem, because it tells also the truth for some people, and also I think it describe what he felt at that time, maybe how was the Byron’s self-esteem.
I will close now. See you in the next class...

  57. Hi miss :)

In this poem I got the impression that all what Lord Byron thought was what the angel said, He is wondering, in this poem, why everyone is always saying God is the most divine, the most powerful and that we are like dust compared to him. Byron protests about God's fairness because if he is so divine and perfect as everyone thinks he is, why had he gave him such a sad childhood and why had he gave other people happy lives.
At the end he talks about little things, that happen to you everyday, things that can be important no matter how little they are, he says those little things aren't big enough for God to see them.

    See you tomorrow Miss :)
    Kisses,

  58. Hi Miss, in this poem from my point of view is saying that Lord Byron felt intimidated and frightened in front of the spirit; he was questioning the power of God in creating all mankind. We are like a particle of dust compared to God, the Seraphines and spirits, they are superior to us.

  59. Hi MIiss!!

This poem is really interesting and the words that Byron use take my heart because all the histories, comics, etc. that talk about pscicology and things about God, angels, ghosts, etc. very like me. The poem show the "romantic" and satirist way of Byron to make his works. Well, this poem questioning the power of God in creating all mankind, however is also questioning the rule of mankind`s rule over the Earth today, is very unique because he seems frightened of spirits maybe evne intimidated and of course very creative and excellent imagery.

    well, that´s all owo
