I totally agree with you, when I first read the poem, I liked it very much because Pope's poem it is about how complicated the people are, they are good but bad at the same time, and they act completely different from what they think, because as you said, we have very opposite behaviours, we are in the middle, between the right and the wrong.

Well Miss, this is my opinion about "The riddle of the world" I hope you liked it

  2. I think that this poem is trying to show us how contradictory human beings can be. Throughout the poem, Pope places human between elements of greatness and failure, ignorance and reason, etc. Is like if were a mass of contradictory behaviours and identities; which is completely true.

Sometimes in our daily life we act as we weren’t thinking what we are doing or saying. For me, mankind has a double moral; one which preaches but don’t practice, and the other that practice but doesn’t preach. We are always criticizing others for what they do and many times we make the same mistakes;”the first you say, the first you do” they say, although it’s difficult to determine who we really are because of our actions and I think that this poem is trying to reflect that aspect of humanity.

We are in the middle of extremes, for example when he says “in doubt to act or rest” or “in doubt to deem ourselves a God or Beasts” It totally makes me reflect and analyse the purpose of this poem but finally, humanity is as it is; it is not about to change it, but to know it. I really think that this poem has unveiled the riddle of the world in a good way, however it’s tough to know the truth of our way of being but now we know that the only one who can change us are ourselves, our actions. After all, I’m convinced that I belong to one race: humanity.

  3. Hi miss
I totally agree with you , as I said before in class. I think what Pope tries to say in his poem , is that human been is so powerful and great that it can be compared with God. But at the same time they are so naive and weak . they are extremes that are together. Strong and weak , Smart and silly. He tries to understand human been behaviors in order to explain how we are. That's why the name of his poem The riddle of the world.
Riddle is a mystery , the mystery of the world that no one have ever discover. That is what the poem is all about. But it also leave us a message we are the owners of our lives and one little choice can change everything.

I really enjoyed the last class.

  4. I really don´t get the idea of the poem !only i understood that people can be in opposite behaviours like the exmple that you give to us (be good or be bad/mean) it only depend of the person and the actitud you give to do the things you must do .
Here i found another poem by alexander pope and i like it so i want to share with everybody here in the blog.

On a certain Lady at Court

    I KNOW a thing that 's most uncommon;
    (Envy, be silent and attend!)
    I know a reasonable woman,
Handsome and witty, yet a friend.

Not warp'd by passion, awed by rumour; 5
    Not grave through pride, nor gay through folly;
    An equal mixture of good-humour
    And sensible soft melancholy.

'Has she no faults then (Envy says), Sir?'
Yes, she has one, I must aver: 10
When all the world conspires to praise her,
The woman's deaf, and does not hear.

I'm agree with you,When I read this poem that it was in class, I really loved it because Pope tries to show about the behaviors of us , describe the human how big is it as god but at the same time how we can be wicked, silly, mean , etc.

Riddle means a mysterious event or situation that you cannot explain
And Pope’s opinion is that we are in the middle of the extremes
That is the reason of 'The riddle of the world'

well, miss this is my opinion about it.

  6. Hi miss,

I agree with you, i think that Alexander Pope tried to explain us with "the riddle of the world" that all of us have the choice to choose the right or the wrong thing. Also that human beings are kind of perfect because he is comparing us with God but, we can make mistakes as we are in the middle of all this riddle.

Well miss i hope you like my opinion of this amazing poem, i really enjoy it.

  8. Hi miss,

I really must agree with you about finding this poem close to reality.
This poem talks about how humanity can't be determined because humanity is a mass of contradictory identities. Every single human being is a whole new world to another.
We can't be described as good because there are also bad people, neither as god or beast because we are not really any of those things.
According to the poem, believing that we are the living image of god is wrong, because god is many things we're not even close to be.
We can be the hunters or either be hunted.
It really impacted me because it left me thinking about how it is my choice to determine who or what I am.
The idea of being "undetermined" seems to me even scarier than those horror movies I never dare to watch. I really liked when he describes the glory as the “joke and the riddle of the world” because I really think that being human is kind of a cruel joke because we have the chance to be so great, and yet we are bad because choice is on our hands and it is hard to resist the temptation. Why make the temptation so hard to resist?
We are often great in what is wrong and wrong in what it’s great
Don’t you agree with me about the cruel joke?
In your hands is the decision to improve what you are or simply get lost on the evil side or not doing anything at all which I find even worse.
Alexander Pope has left me really surprised as he could manage to describe all the contradictions and basically the truth of humanity in this poem.
He was really a genius. I really hope this poem has impacted all my school mates as much as it did with me so we can start trying to make ourselves improve what we are.

I agree with your opinion, the poem is so interesting, when i read it at first time i didn`t understand, but when you explained us everything change.
It`s a surprise for me to read how the people of that time thought about the mistery of the life.
The poem is about our reality, because is completely truth that we lived between the greatness and failure.
Pope was an intelligent man, he wrote many things about human beings and he tried to understand the mystery of the world.

  10. Hi miss,

I totally agree with your opinion about the poem. It shows all the contradictions about human beings and how our behaviors define us.
We can choose to do the right thing or not and the decision we make will determine who we are.
I must say that this poem is one of my favorites so far because, as the title says, it is a riddle and we will be always asking ourselves and trying to find an answer but human beings are so complicated and everybody is different that it will be like a mystery all the time and something that we just can't explain.
I liked the part where Pope said:
"In doubt his mind and body to prefer"
Which is so true because most of the time we will be in this position where we must choose between mind or body. Two choices completely different and we have to decide what to do.
"Born but to die, and reas’ning but to err"
    It is contradictory and confusing.

    Definitely, Pope was a genius.

  11. Hi miss,

In my personal opinion, human beings, each of them have been always a mystery, a completely different world. In the poem, it says that there exists many sides in the man that only one can be shown, and that's his decisions, so then they are gonna be defined by actions, that's what people around him are gonna to see.

In those times and now, we have had that contradictory sides but that’s how we are gonna show how rational and different from animals we are.

We have been blessed with that ability to think and decide, what is called rationality, so it’s better to take advantage of that.

I found it really close to reallity. As humans we are not perfect at all, and we are always in between. Is the choices we make it what defines us, we can be good or bad, be brave or a coward. But we are never going to be perfect, that's one thing we wanted to stand out.

There is nothing we can do just make a good choices. is true we where created to be perfect but we are not.

It´s definitely true, human beings are always between something :God and Evil,do or not do,greatness and failure, etc we are not perfect at all.Fortunately, we have the ability to think and decide,so we must to take advantage of that.
The only thing we have to do is to choose what makes us a better person, to be defined as "a good person" by our actions despite having contradictory sides.

Of course I agree with you , I believe that our specie is so incredible that i can't believe it .
We are always between good and bad things , It just depends of us , to choose the good way.
As it says the riddle of the world looks for what defines humanity , for sure we could be so strong but also weak.

Our actions makes us , so we only have to think about it.

I totally agree with you. Pope said that human beings are defined by their behaviors and its true, people has an idea of us taken as reference our actions and behaviors so we are good or bad people.
But no one can tell us what to do to become a better person , every human being has to decide their actions, and realize if we are making mistakes.

Well,I really like this poem, the way that Pope contrast the good and the bad and how he defined the human beings. Definately, he was a very wise man.

We were born to be perfect but we are not. We can be ignorant or reasonable. We are always between good and evil, the choice depend on us. So in conclusion, we are the ones who define our own identity.

As you said, this poem is very close to our reality because in this poem Pope show us the reality. The real life. We must be very proud to have the ability to do choices; to do somenthing good or something bad. All our life is choice. We choose what we are going to wear, who are we goig to date, what we are goig to do in the future, etc. We also have the oportunity to think and decide what is the best for us. Definitly that poem is going to be one of my favoutites!

Well, I'm totaly agree with you.Because Pope saw the reality of those times. But not only that happened before, it happens now and in the future too. Because we are humans and we have to fell down many many times to see what we are doing right or what not.

As human being, we are always fighting against ourselfes and always we have to choose between goodness or evil, or behaviour and identity, or if our actions are going to affect in our future or not, so it's really difficult to decide.

But if we just think what we are doing with our lifes and with God's help I think that everything it's posible.

I also found this poem really close to our reality because as you explain it in class it is about human decitions. We always are choosing and deciding what is better or what we want, what is good or wrong. Also, the poem states that we are not as God image because he is perfect and we do not. We all know that what makes as human is to be able to make mistakes. This way, we will learn more to be a better person.

That is why I think this poem mentions many true things that are real and happen in our everyday life.

  21. Hi miss,

I agree with your comment because people in the life have to choose between the different opportunities that can appear knowing they might be right or wrong, knowing that they may not appear again so we have to make a decision at the moment and it have to be the one that it's better for us and that satisfied us, too.

So, as the poem says we are always in doubt, between one thing and the other. That's why many people don't know what to choose and sometimes they go through the bad way and it can become lethal.

Well, I really like the poem, it caught my attention in the way it developed.

  22. Hi Miss,
Well I totally agree with your opinion. What Pope wants to transmit with this poem is that we are always between what to choose, to decide, and if that will be wrong or right. Human’s actions are contrary of what they think, their behaviors define the kind of person they are.
We always do bad things, thinking they are good and don’t even realize the consequences they could have. And then, we said that we are the best in the whole world and we are inspired to be as God. But, we are definitively wrong, this is not true, we act just because we have bodies and fingers; most of us, don’t take care of human beings, we criticize the others but do the same thing.
So, what are we waiting? Since Pope wrote this incredible poem to the world, nobody has done something to change or give another meaning to life.
That’s why humanity definition is considered as an exploration; because we are the ones who decide to be great or to fail in our daily activities so then we become people who think to find the easiest way of everything and don’t improve ourselves. This is the truth of humanity.
All this, make me realize what way I want for my life, so I’ll promise myself to act thinking about the benefits and the consequences of it, then I’ll become successful in everything I do.

    Best Wishes :D

When I first read this poem I didn’t understand it but then I got the idea. I totally agree with Pope. We are defined by our behaviors because most of the people have a reference about you when they look and observe your acts. Also we have our lives in our hand. We are the ones who decide about our own future because every decision is in our hands. As Pope says human beings have two options to do things that are right and thing that are wrong, we decide it. We decide everything we do. We are not animals we are capable to give our opinions and to think. I really like this poem and it is our reality. I think that it doesn’t matter how long has it passed; this idea is going to be real.

About your opinion I totally agree. The human beings are complicated and our behaviors define us. We can make the decision to do the right thing or not, and also pope said that the human beings are defined by their behaviours and our actions too.
Human beings are a mystery because we are different from each other and that’s why exist many sides in a man that let it show in their actions and decisions.

I like the part when pope said that “the proper study of Mankind is man and placed on this isthmus of a middle state”. Because the man is the centre of the humanity and in the middle of something that’s why we sometimes don’t know who we are and what is the right thing to do.

  26. Hi Miss,

I totally agree with you about the meaning of this poem. It talks about the mass of contradictions in human beings as behaviors and identities, and how they are defined by their actions.

What I’m trying to say is that we can say lots of things about something but what makes the difference is if we really do it or if it just stays in words. Another important thing about this poem is that it shows the idea of human beings being somewhere in between the elements of greatness and failure. And the thing is that we live every day of our lives making decisions, and life proves us giving us the temptation of doing what is wrong and not what we should do. And the truth is that most of the times we are good in what is wrong and bad in what is good.

But can we really avoid this? Of course we can! God have give us the amazing opportunity to make our own decisions because he trust us, but unfortunately not all of us get advantage of it. Now, I'm not saying that it's easy to avoid temptation (especially if we are easy to convince) but at least we should try because I think we are all capable of distinguish what's good and what’s bad and the consequences if we make a bad choice.

I must say that I really love this poem, and as the other writers Alexander Pope was a genius, but with something peculiar: he talks about us and what reality is, and that is what I like most about him. I really think that any person that read this poem it’s going to like it as much as I did and even get to change to be a better person.

  29. Hi miss,

I have been really impressed with Pope’s work because through his poems he tells the things as they are. That’s what I really like about him, his unique way of writing. First of all, I totally agree with the title “The riddle of the world” because by saying riddle he refears to something we don’t know. In his poem he is talking about the human beings, as a matter of fact he is talking about the enigma of being human beings.

In his poem he puts the man as the center of humanity. He is also talking about the contradictions that have the human beings in their life, for example when we have to choose between good and bad things. Another thing he says when he writes this verse “A being darkly wise, and rudely great…” is that in spite of all of our qualities and strengths, we do have our weaknesses.

This poem is saying that we are a mass of contradictory behaviors and identities. And that we can’t define ourselves. But something that makes us closer in the definition of who we are, are our actions. The things we do or do not do. This is very important because our action will always have a consequence. This consequence will be good or bad depending on what we have done. For this reason is better to take our time to think first and then act so we won’t do things that we may regret later.

This poem is just not saying other thing that the truth. I’m very glad to have had the opportunity to read it and to realize how things are. And practice it in my daily life in order to make it better.

  30. Hi miss,

I must say I totally agree with you. At first, I didn't understand it clearly but after re-reading it, I got with the idea that it as about our fake.

I believe it's close to our reality because in some way it makes us reflect about everything in the life. To compare between the good and the bad things, to choose whether to do what is correct or incorrect, to decide to be relaxed or foccussed.

With many more examples it explains us that life is full of decisions, which in most of the cases, aren't easy to choose; but despite that is neccesary to keep always in mind that we are not perfect and we can do mistakes.. but we can also enmend them.

To sum up, I have to say that Alexander Pope left me really surprise because of the way he showed us reality. I trully love the poem.

  31. Hi miss,

I agree with you when you say that Pope's work "The riddle of the world" is very closer to our reality.

The poem is focus in human beings. The intention of Pope is to explain how human beings are judge by their actions. This means that the most important thing of humans and what he defined are human acts. In this way, he could see if people are acting bad or good. That's why these seem to be contradictory because human beings are put in between extremes: elements of greatness or failure; they can be ignorants or have the reason. The actions of human beings reveal that it is difficult to determine who they are.

Nowadays we can listen a lot about this topic, in religion, in civic, in philosophy, etc. In all of them it is talked about the correct and incorrect things that we do or do not do. This gives us an idea that are our acts which characterize us as an specific person and show us how we are.

I have really enjoyed this poem as it is more related to our current situation. I really hope we can continue reading poems like this one, in which the human is the center.

  32. I think that this poem ‘the riddle of the world' written by Pope wants to transmit how contrary and complicate are the humans. We always act in a different way that we think and maybe he try to find the truth of the world, he was a solitary person, and he never get married and he wants to be more specifics of our acts because he put us, the humans, in opposite sides: to act or do not act, so the positions are really close .And as we can see he write about the same topic that is humans.
In conclusion, I am totally agree with you.

As you can see, we are so contradictory and so complicated that you will never know what to expect with our behavior.
Every person has a different way of thinking, people has different answers to everything that happen.

  34. Hi miss,

About your opinion ,i totally agree , but i have to confess , that when i read it for the first time , i didn’t understand what Pope wanted to transmit because he used some contradictions so i got a bit confused .

Well as Pope says “ Still by himself, abus’d o disabus’d; created half to rise and half to fall” it's a clearly concept of the reality.

After many readings , i can say that the only inspiration he could have in his poem , was for to make us understand that we take our own decisions but before it, we have to think it twice and not only demonstrate weackness and if you have any kind of problem , you have to face and solve it .

Over time human beings have been asking questions and looking for answers making us going crazy but when you read poems such as this one , you notice that you are not the only one who sometimes can’t find a good argument for all.

Finally, i found this poem very interesting and i love it

  35. Hi miss,

To be honest, when I looked for the poem and I found it, I was worried because I didn't understand many of the words. However, there are many key words that helped me to understand the context, so after half and hour I AGREE WITH YOU :)

It's true and it's said as well that we consider ourselves as the centre of everything. We overestimate ourselves thinking we are powerful enough to deal with everything, and that we are better and more important than any other alive beiing. Thinking in this way can develop lots of bad thing as it is said in the poem. This can bring chaos by the time we are thinking and hate among us.

This is an attitude that every human being has inside his soul. To conclude, this poem definetely made me reflect of my acts and the ones form the others.

  36. Pope's satire showcased his sometimes devastating wit but was often used
to good effect in a more sombre vein, as in this poem.

This poem helped me to reflex about the world. All of us are part of the world also of the human, everyday we make mistakes but we make good actions too, We are the only one who select our the wrong or the right way this are the only 2 ways, in the poem he compare :God and Evil also it says that there exists many sides in the man that only one can be shown.

What we want for the future? is in our hands, this poem was wrote in the past but we can use it to learn.

I think that what this poem is trying to say is how the human being is always in the middle, in our life we have the chance to make good things or bad things if we want, that means that we actually have the chance to make our own decisions in life.

this poem can be really shocking because it shows the reality of the world. It also talks about how contradictory can we be with our actions and decisions, and how this can afect our life.

I find this poem very close to our reality because each of us has the opportunity to choose the way in which each one would live and also can choose the path that best seems to you because each one is independent in choosing because we are in the middle , between what is right or wrong. All this is our decision.

In conclusion I think that this poem made me think about many actions we are taking and can not always be "good" for others, perhaps seeing us not so affected.

We are actually really interesting beings due to our capacity to think and choose between what is right and what is wrong, what is easy and what is difficult.

We tend to do and think things over and over and try to understand everything around us. We confuse ourselves and contradict ourselves with every thing we do.

We are a mix of thoughts and feelings and that's the essence of mankind.
Every little thing in our lives makes us choose between our animal instincts and our logical nature.

Pope was really a wise man who knew how to express and makes us think about things around us that he saw with different eyes. Or at least that's my impression.

I hope I knew what was he thinking to write this poem, don't you?

Well, now I need to go!
    See you tomorrow!

  41. Hi Miss,

Well, as we were talking in class, I totally agree with you on the idea that this poem is about how contradictory we, as human beings can be. Pope places us, as if we were a mass of contradictory behaviours and identities, and I can say that I completely agree with this idea.

Many times, we criticise someone else behaviour, and suddenly we start behaving like that person, and then we say: why did I do it? I was wrong! Yes, may be we were wrong, may be we did not think what we were saying, or what we were doing, may be we started feeling bad about that, but we are human beings, and we are always making mistakes, the thing is to learn the lesson of each mistake and try to be better each day.

To be honest, this poem made me realize a lot, of we of course, of some of my classmates and some people I know. And this poem, also gave a lesson, and that lesson is to pay more attention next time I want to say something, no matter if it is good or bad, I will think it two times.

I like and enjoy the poem a lot.
Thank you for sharing this space wih us.
God bless you Miss, see you tomorrow!

  43. hi miss!
well i agree with your opinion because the poem is about human beings and how do they consider themself.
Human has been made to think and to take decition even if they are good or bad, but the mayority only think for their convenience.

Also in the poem pope says that human is compared to god but at the same time we know that it cant be true because God is perfect and we are not.

finally i think pope wanted to explain the human thought and the way he sees human mind

    see you next class :)

  44. Hi miss,

I completely agree with you. I think that Alexander Pope try to explain in his poem that people do good and bad things and that usually people do the things that are easier for them.

Also as you said us in the class the human actions define the human beings. I totally agree with this because you define a person according to his way of acting. Also, you said that we are between good and evil, I agree with that because I think that there isn’t a completely bad and good person; we all make mistakes in life. That's why we say that we aren’t perfect and that the only perfect person is God.

I hope you like my comment,

    Hi Miss
I agree with you because we always have doubt of everything, we are very contradictory and I can prove this with me , because I am also like this. The reality of the humans is like this poem, we will never be sure of something and our ideas and thought will change during our live.

  47. Miss Monica :)

I totally agree with you, because I think this poem shows us the thing that are good and bad of the world.
It is said that human beings are identified with their actions and that we are born to die, to make errors and that we are in the middle of GOD an evil.

So I believe this poem made me reflect of my own actions and I think we all need to reflect and be concious about that...because if we try to be a better person everyday, the world would be full of joy and happiness! (:

  48. Hi Miss!

Well, I must begin saying that I totally agree with you, I mean as I told you in the class when I first read it in the class I was totally lost, and I mean it, I didn't understand the words they were different (of couse they were from the ancient english) but I had an idea, then when we read it aloud and we started say some ideas, I saw I had a good idea about it and I wasn't on the street.

Anyway, I remember that you ask Mafe what define human beings and she said thoughts, but then you correct her by saying it was acts that define us and I must admit that I am on sympathy with that as we can think lots of thinks but it's what we do that defines us as a good or bad person. For example, we can think that saving the Earth is good and we should be ambientalist and think in the future generations, but if we use sprays and through rubbish on the streets then where is what we thought?

This all, make us think that we are paradoxical and that the world is full of contradictory actions as for example in the poem it said that we were right but wrong, we act yet rest and other divergent actions.

Furthermore, I believe that this poem is not far from reality considering that it refers to the human itself and to everything that makes relation with them and the decisions they must do to follow the black or white path.

All in all, I believe thsi is an amazing poem that has given us many lessons from which we have to learn and apply in life. In addition, I reckon Alexander Pope is a genious that could explain the meaning of the actions and behaviour human beings have and that could put the unsolved problem of the Earth into words as anyone has ever has.

    See you tomorrow,

  49. Hi Miss
First of all, I want to tell you that the first time I read 'The riddle of the world' I was confused, because I don´t understand many words, but when you explained it, I finally understand it.

About the poem I would like to share you my opinion:
Firstly what I understand of the poem was that always is going to exist the bad and the good thing, the black and white, God and the Beast, etc. But we have to choose; sometimes the human being is led by evil, but not always, because we are in the middle of the bad and good thing, and we have to think not only in us, we have to think in the world.

I also think that we are the "riddle of the world", because you don't now your behaviour at all, people and also you change frequently.

  54. well about The 'riddle of the world' I found this poem very reflexive, because It talks about finding the way to do bad or good things. It depends on us to made the right choose.
The message of this poem make us think about the desitions we made thats why we can use it like a model of our own decisions.
