MOORE'S WORK

In the poem 'Go where glory waits thee' we have observed that a man could have wrote that for a a former lover. Could you imagine another person who could have been saying those words? If so, write your reasons.

  1. Hi miss (: So before of answering your question , I'll put some of Thomas Moore biography
Thomas Moore (28 May 1779 – 25 February 1852) was an Irish poet, singer, songwriter, and entertainer, now best remembered for the lyrics of The Minstrel Boy and the The Last Rose of Summer.Born on the corner of Aungier Street in Dublin, Ireland[1] over his father's grocery shop, his father being from an Irish speaking Gaeltacht in Kerry and his mother, Anastasia Codd, from Wexford. He was educated at Trinity College, which had recently allowed entry to Catholic students, and he studied law at the Middle Temple in London. It was as a poet, translator, balladeer and singer that he found fame. His work soon became immensely popular and included The Harp That Once Through Tara’s Halls, Believe Me, if All Those Endearing Young Charms, The Meeting of the Waters and many others. His ballads were published as Moore's Irish Melodies (commonly called Moore's Melodies) in 1846 and 1852. While Thomas Moore was completing his many works he met a girl with the name of Lena Angese who encourged him with his works. She also helped him with his future compositions and they became very close. Although she was said to have fallen in love with him she suddenly appeared missing. In search of where she had disappeared to Moore found that she had died just days before he went to look for her.
So , to the answer of your question ,the poem expresses love I would even say more than that. He constantly mention that he wants to be remember in happy moments like he says right here "But when friends are nearest,
    And when joys are dearest,
    Oh! then remember me!"
He does not wants to be forgot by that person. I think he is writing this poem ,to someone that he loves very much , and that person love him back , but then can't be together. So in that way , they can be together , even though they aren't.
Well that's what I believe is the meaning.
    See you next class
PS:Miss , I was apsent today , do you think next class i could do my assesment or maybe with the other classroom. And if it couldnt be possible , could I do some kind of work to get a mark?
    Thats all (:

  2. Hi Miss,

In my opinion this poem is about love between a famous woman and maybe he, in which she wants to leave him, because she is in love with another person

We can clearly see that he is not opossed to this separation. We don´t know exactly why this happens , but I can deduce that he is very depressed as he describes with details how he think she will feel when they were separeted and maybe he wanted her to think that the separation was a mistake

I really liked this poem, the way he writes is amazing, because he know how to contrast the sadness with the happiness

  3. Hi miss
I think that it is a really good poem
and there are a lot of songs that we listen that have the same idea as the poem, so maybe there are based on Moore's poem.

For me he is trying to let her know that she have make a big mistake leaving him, telling her that even when she saw him she will miss him and that she would never forget him.

  4. Hi miss,

Well, for this poem are a lots of interpretations .
First, i have to say that this poem made me reflect about love .But then i tought that maybe Moore was talking about how glory change people .
I think that its about how the glory change the hearts of people .He try not to forget himself, do not forget who he is.
Also , i believe that he is talking to his wife because she was an actress so I think he felt that he was losing her .

The poem is really exciting , i love it .

    thanks for everything

    Miss Monica,

I think this poem is base on Love, maybe a not corresponded love. He was inlove with his person, but the she left and left him, he was not mad but he knows even thought she trys to forget him she won't. He knows that no body would gave her the things he gave her or the love and that she will Remember HIM... This love was not met to be, but they would be forever in each others memories. And even though she is famous in her glory, in every second, she will remember him. Reading his poem I just can imagine all the things that they went throught so he could write that.I think that he won't forget her too and I just wonder how deep his love story was....How love could be so deep that it stays forever on the lovers minds, including when they are so far away, or they are not together any more.Stays in their memories.

  7. I really liked this poem because it was very romantic and as you said we can observe that a man could have wrote that for a former lover.
In my opinion, if we based on the anylisis of the poem, that says that he thought he was worth to be remember it could also be a father that died and left a letter to his son or daugther. Parents love their children so much and although they know they will meet a lot new people and they will fall in love, they want to be remember after they died.
    When it says:
    "Other arms may press thee,
    Dearer friends caress thee"
It could also mean that but it would be a little bit wird in some parts when we see that he is really passionate.

  8. Miss Monica:

As I told you in class, the poem made me think of a mom who is letting her only child go and live her life, to have her own experiences, her own mistakes, her own glory, her own fame. Because for me, it expresses the deep pain and how difficult is to let go of someone you love, especially when you want the other person to be happy, not to be harmed at all.

And she´s also asking her to remember everything they lived together, how she raised her, helped her walk, taught her her first words and how she will always love her despite everything. She´s saying: Remember me no matter how much your life improves, just remember I love you.

I know the words in the poem are more appropiate for two lovers but It also made me think of the mother.
    Anyway that´s all
    Bye miss take care.

  9. Hi Miss,

Well, I interpretated in another way from others, I think, that he is making this poem for a person that was very special, and that made a big impression in his live, but not only that, because this person is not going away, for me, this is about someone that is dying, and he wants him/her to still remember him in his glory.

I also feel, that he feels worthy to remember, because between both of them had something really special going on, not only a relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend, but as friends or relatives, that love each other a lot.

Well, Miss that is what I think about this poem.

  10. Hi Miss,

From my point of view, this poem could be also done by a person who is dedicating it to an old friend.

Sometimes, friends come and go depending on our highs and our lows and they decided not be be there when we needed them the most.We thought they will be there for us but when something great happens to them, they just forget us.

When we pass through a difficult momment, only our real friends will be there supporting us and we must be grateful with them. Life is not always by our side, and we will find many people who will smlile at you and then betray you in the worst way you could imagine or you could find people who could be loyal and a good friend.

So what I was trying to say is that maybe this person is dedicating these words to an old friend that maybe temptation got to his head and fame and new friends are with him right now, however he must not forget the person who since the beginging was with him in the wonderful or difficult momments in his life and no matter what, this person now want to be remembered.

  11. Hi miss,
For me the poem is maybe for a very closed friend he loved very much and his friend was maybe very far from him and moore was missing him.

Another probability is that moore was pasing through very hard moments and he need his friend who is very far away and need the support of someone and that's why he wrote the poem.

  12. Hi Miss,
Personally, I think the person who could have said these words apart from Tomas Moore ;who dedicated these words from his poem "Go where glory waits thee" to his former lover, an artist who had left him in order to develop her career and that he felt worth to be remembered; could be a person who wants her mother or his father,to not leave her/him because they have a good relationship and have passed good moments together, and to loose a relative is like having an empty heart.
Another case could be, say these words to a close friend.

  13. Hi miss,
This poem obviously was written for a former lover. He could have written it to a close friend that it's leaving to another country because he mentions the moments of joy also he mentions the seasons where maybe with a friend in each of them the have passed good moments.

Other person would be to his mother or to his father. Maybe he's writing this like if they were saying these words to him. Maybe where the words that he wanted his parents told him.

  14. Hi miss,

From my point of view, I think the person who could have say these words apart from T. Moore, can be also someone who dedicates to his/her love not to go from the country, like saying goodbye to this person and to not forget about them. And all the past is like a lesson that they have learn for their future.

Another case could be someone that is trying to forget his past but like "saying to the world" not to forget his actions.

  15. Hi miss Monica,

Well, the poem is obviously about a person who wants to be remember so I think this poem could be wrote by a grandparent that wants that his grandson or family remember him after he passed away. He would want to remember him with simple things that we use to see everyday and also with the moments they lived with him.
Another case could be an old friend or your first boyfriend.

This poem is beautiful but it is very sad at the same time. Anyway, I really like it.

  16. Hi miss,

Well in my opinion when we first read the poem i thought that it was about love and i still think it is, but if you analyze it deeply you can realize that it has other interpretations.

For example, I think that this poem was written for a very special person who made a very big impression in his life that has died or is dying. By this poem he always wants to be remembered specially in the happy moments he spent with this person.

One of these persons can be his mother, brother or sister but it can also be a friend, because friendship is shown in the not only in the easy moments but in the worst too, and this is a way of appreciation for all the things they have been through; so this friendship turns so strong that they become our family and we can consider them as a sister or a brother.

    That's all for now

  17. His miss,

As you said, this poem is written for a former lover and the poet is trying to say that he is worth to be remembered by her.

This makes me relate the theme with the love that a mother could have to her daughter or son (not baby anymore) that have to grow up and follow their own way, without having to theirs mothers next to them. This makes the mothers feel like they are going to loose the strong conection that they had with their children, and that's why she wants them to remember her in every happy moment of their lifes as she deserves it after having raised them since they were kids. Of course, the mother is also showing the enormous love that they had with them.

On the other hand, I have also related the theme of the poem with a man who is writing to the woman he is in love with, but she has travelled very far away and she doesn't expect to return, that's why the man writes a letter saying her goodbye but asking her to remembered him for the rest of her life.

I think is all for now. See you soon

  18. To begin with this, i can say that i really liked it a lot because this based on love but not a kind of a wonderful love this is based on a pain of love because she’s already gone and he is trying to say that she is still with him even if she is not anymore by he side. But the only thing he wants is that she remembers him.

  19. Hi miss,

Well, as we can see is a love poem and he is dedicating this to a lover, who maybe left him and he still remember her, and in this poem he is remembering those great moments in a melancolic way

But in my opinion, maybe he is dedicating this poem to his mom. To that mom who left him on his own, and he missed her, but eventhought he is remembering those happy moments with her.

    That's all,

  20. Hi miss,

To start with, I have to say that the first impression I got from this poem is from a song called Fallen Angel of the band Poison, who tells the story of towngirl who became an actress but found herself in hell when living the reality of the famous life.

But after reading it several times, it wasn't that critizing as the Fallen Angel song, it was in fact something deeper, from someone who was really close to other person.

So, maybe it could be for a close friend or just someone close who goes away to look for something better and find it getting glory and becoming famous.

The poems exalts that you can get glory, fame, anything you want in your life, but you'll remember or miss the one who stayed by your side and help you to stand and get through difficult moments, when you have them in middle of the fame. Why remember him? Because he knows that person enough to believe that despite being ambicious, is at the same sensitive, friendly, sincere, which will make him/her remember those times when they were together.

    that's it, see you...

  21. I think this is one of the few poems I understood after reading it for the first time. For me, this poem has been written for a woman by her lover.

But if we appreciate it from a different point of view, a grandfather could also have written it for his grandson. It make me think in a situation where a grandfather is in his last days and write a letter to his only grandson, so he could remember all the moments they lived together because maybe this boy do not have his parents alive and his only support was his grandpa.

It is a really sad situation but it could be real. Also it could happen that the more the boy grew, the more he turned spoiled and ungrateful to his grandpa. In spite of this, the old man still remember the days they spent doing funny things and having happy moments; so he wanted his grandson to remembered them too.

That’s what came to my mind when analyzing the poem.

    That’s all,

  22. Hi miss,

I personally think Moore is trying to express to his lover that he wants her to remember him and all the things they went through because they are really worth it.

I also think this poem can have many interpretations as it can be dedicated to different people. For example, a mother could dedicate this poem to his son or her daughter that have already grown up, expressing him or her all her love and telling them although they have to follow their own way, she would never stop loving them and that she wants them to remember all the thing she taught them since they were little kids and also to remember her always.

A friend can also dedicate this poem to his or her friend that has travelled far away and they don’t see each other for all long time. There he is trying to express to her or his friend that in spite of the distance between them it is really worth to remember all the things they went through and that he appreciate he or she a lot.

Another possible case, can be that a man is dedicating it to a woman he loves but she isn’t with him anymore and that is the reason why he writes his poem saying her goodbye but he is also asking her to remembered him for the rest of her life.

I believe that I listen similar words mentioned in the poem in a Spanish song.... Well, this poem show many feelings that Moore had for the person that he loved. Anybody know if he write his feelings for their wife or for a lover, or a platonic love, etc. Also the true is all the poem can identificated us, well... the people who have that experiences.

Well, in my opinion I think that Moore wrote the poem dedicated to a woman that he loved and they had a strong relationship, so that's why he is telling her all those things, specially the "oh, then remember me".

Imagining another person who could have sayed those words.. well, first of all it's difficult because he is talking about love so that couldn't have been written by anyone for any person but if I'd have to choose, it would be a mother telling his son not to forget her and always remember her in all those things she tought him.

  25. Hi miss,
As you said you weren’t going to have a free weekend I’ll try to make a short but accurate comment about Moore’s poem called 'Go where glory waits thee'.

This poem for me was really amusing as it’s not a typical love story. I believe that he wrote it to his former lover, he still love her and is trying to tell her that it was a big mistake to broke up with him because she would never forget him. But maybe it could also have been written to someone he truly loved and who was far away.

However, I also had the impression that he was talking about his own glory, as he was the first catholic to enter to university he may have been recognized by others who (in the same condition as him), couldn’t have a formal education and he is trying to advised us no to became bigheaded and selfish if we reach glory.

All in all, although it’s kind of confusing I enjoyed it very much.
    -----------------------------------------------
    By the way,
I didn’t finish my assessment of Moore so here is the answer for the last question: “Describe Moore in your own words”

Personally, I believe Moore was a really well educated man, who achieved a lot of new things that other people couldn’t achieved and even though he was not very well looked by the others (because he was Byron’s friend) he never gave up his dreams.

Well, I think that’s all for now.
    Take care (:

  26. Hi Miss,

At first, when I read it, it made me think about two persons that love each other very much, but for some reasons they have to separate.

Interpreteting it in a different way, maybe a mother wrote the poem for his son, because her child is going far away. And this is very sad, because a mother raise her child all her life, preparing him to face the real world, loving him and teaching him what is correct and incorrect. Then she has to let him live his own experiences, adventures and life.

In the poem, all she is telling him is to remember her, as she had been very important and relevant in his life. It is such a beautiful and deep love, that she wants to be remembered in every moment in his life and they will never forget each other, even when one of them is dying.

I can conclude that love is a very strong feeling in which the happiness of another person is essential to our own. That is reflect on the poem, the son is going away but the mother is happy because that is the way life is, and she will always keep in mind the happy moments.

  27. Hi miss,

Well, I thought in the posibility that it was a letter from a guy that was ill and he used to go out with a girl. He knew that his illness will kill him, and he left that letter to his girlfriend, to help her to overcome his absence in the world after his death.
Also, to help her to see the world with other eyes, in a new perspective. To make her feel that there are lots of opportunitives in life that won't repeat. And to encourage her trough the world she doesn't even know about.

It's a very sad poem, because it shows how we say goodbye to things we really love. And that's why we love that things, because we love them so hard that we want everything for them and their happiness.

I don't want to be forget, either!

  28. To start I must say that the poem "Go Where Glory waits thee" is a beautiful poem, but at the same time very sad.

The theme of the poem is love. I think Moore through his poem expresses that still loves and fears being forgotten your concern can be seen as often repeats the phrase "Oh!" Then remember me. "
Apparently she is with another man as the poem says "Other May press thee arms" despite this he wants to be remembered in every happy moment of the former lover.

This poem has many interpretations, I mentioned one of them.

    I really love this poem

  29. Hi Miss,

Well, i think this poem express a kind of suffering from Moore. Also i believe that he is writing to a woman, specifically his wife because we know that his wife was a actress so she had fame and in the second line says "But, while fame elates thee, Oh! still remember me". Another point into consideration for this poem is that he repeats a lot "Oh! still remember me" so i think that even though she had left, he wants her to remember him because he is still loving her.
Answering to your question i do believe that could be another writers, not necessarily famous, but they could do that kind of poems, no as beatiful as Moore did it but almost the same because 'Go where glory waits thee" is very similar to a modern poem actually.

That is my interpretation of 'Go where glory waits thee" i really liked it.

  30. Hi Miss Monica

Maybe the poem ` Go where glory waits thee´ is about a mom who is letting her son go and to have her own experiences. She is telling in a way the reason of giving him his freedom and how difficult is for her to forget all the good memories that she had spent with her son, who still loves and remembered all the time and does not want him to go wrong. She only wants to be remembered because she feels that he is going to forget her and every moment they were together.

Another person could be Thomas Moore for his former lover, that had success in her work and now she is better than in the past.

I think this man is still loving her, so, now he told her that she is going to remember him when she is whith another man or when she is doing things without him. I also think that she maybe leave him because she was a very famous girl and he was nothing, just a poor guy.

  35. Hi Miss Monica,

Firstly, I need to say that the poem it’s really good because it makes you realize that we need to appreciate the people who are always for you and support you.

I believe that the poem refers to a man who wrote this for a former lover but also it can be interpret in another way.
Perhaps a man could have written this for a relative or someone very important to him and he wrote this to him/her because they haven’t seen each other for a long time. He is telling to another person that he would be pleased if she/he remembers him always.

In conclusion, the poem teach us that we need to thank to the people who is always for you as I said before that’s why we need to take advantage of the moments that we spend with them because we don’t know what is going to happen in the future, perhaps they could go away to another place.

    Dear Miss,

I want to tell you that I enjoy this poem a lot for many reasons.

For a start, it´s nice that you can have your own perseption. It has many interpretations, depend on the person.

Another thing is that it has a message. The poem gives you a kind of advice about not being nor selfish neither arrogant when you get what you want like being famous.

My personal interpretation about this poem is that a man used to love a woman very much, however she dumped him to follow her dream that was to be famous. The man believes that now that she has reached it, she regrets and wants to come back with him, but he doesn´t.

  37. Hi Miss (:

I want to start saying that it was a really good poem and that I enjoy alnalysing it and thinking what he could be talking about. As you said at class that you didn't have much time to correct, I'll make my comment shorter this time.

To me, this poem seem to be about love, especifically a man is telling this to a girl. It doesn't appear to be the typical love story, as there's no happy ending, in fact, he is telling her to remember him when she's doing all kind of activities this make me think that she has broken up with him and they are no longer together.

As I can feel a lot of tenderness and warmth, I believe he worte this to someone he knew, it may be to a former lover or someone he really loved.

Despite of what I have just said, maybe this poem is not from love at all. Instead he is telling everyone out there to remember him because he is important, he may consider this way as he was the first catholic to enter university, we can see it here:
"Go where glory waits thee, but while fame elates thee, Oh! still remember me. When the praise thou meetest.."
We can also think that he is a proud person as he was a close friend of Lord Byron and it was thought that he was just like him.

To sum up, I believe we can have different connotations about it as it is a little confusing, however I believe this was his intention. To make people analyse it and think what it means according to their thoughts, costumes, and cultural environment.

    That's all for now.
    Take care and see you next class (;

When I read the poem It caught my senses completely.
It's just the way he writes about his love , how he wants to be remembered by her. It's so beautiful.
About your question , I got the idea that it was written by someone that had a terminal disease to his love, and when he died , he wants her to remember him , but just in the happy moments because he doesn't want her to be sad.

  39. Hi Miss :)

How are you? Hope you're not so tired. Anyway, as I told you, my computer isn't working quite well, so I'm in an Internet cabin as I have to post my comment doesn't matter how.

According to the poem, I belive he wrote it for his former lover who by now, she has already left him and it's probable she had moved to another country. It seems they broke up in an improperly way as in every word which is expressed in the poem make me feel that he is really hurted. For this reason, he thinks it's fair for him to be remembered always as she will never find someone who loves her as much as he did. What's more, despite he is really hurted, he doesn't show any feeling of evilness.

To me, it was a really inspiring and really touching poem who made me reflect on how powerful love is when you feel it from the bottom of your heart.

Before, I send it I must say that I totally agree with one of the comments which is above mine. WHEN YOU FEEL ALONE, OH! THEN REMEMBER US!

    Love you,

    Hi Miss :)

First of all I must say that this poem is beautiful and when I first read it I imagine a lot of things, like that it was for a lost love, a friend, a mother or anything like that but what most come to my mind was the image of a friend.

I think this poem is to a friend that is going to leave the country or the city, or maybe that he is going to lost his life. Also, it is because among all the poem he talks about joys and great moments and that kind of moments you ussually have it with your friends.

  41. Hello Miss. Monica,

First,I think that this poem is a love poem and could be use in lots of ways and can have several interpretations. In this poem Moore asks someone not to forget him but he doesn't really specifies whether is female or a male, a lover or a friend, I think he could even be a relative; the only thing that is absolutely clear is that Moore really loved that person and that has his heart broken about this person leaving.
I believe that tis poem could be something he wrote to a very dearest person to him, a person he didn't want to forget or he didn't want to be forgotten by.

  42. Hi miss,

Well, first of all, I think that this poem express de pathos in a very good way, because after you read it, there's a feeling of sadness.

The first thing you think is that it's a man whose wife is going away, but that's not the only case, it could be a mother and her son, maybe he grew up and he needed to do his own life, so he has to leave his mother, and she want to be remember and that's why she tell him to think about her every happy moment.

Another case is two friends, maybe they met when they were very little, and their friendship endured. But ,as the same case as the mother, they have to do their lifes apart. But that doesn't mean that their friendship is over, because it'll be in their minds, a strong friendship never forgets.

This is my appreciation, and I hope you like it.

    Take Care (:

  43. hi Miss :)

I think the poem "Go Where Glory waits thee" is about moore and her wife, because she was an actrees and in the poem he mention the fame and how does it change a person, so he decide to express all his feelings and he write this poem because he don’t want to be forgot he want to let her know that their love will stay in their memories forever.

y really like this poem is beautiful and i also like the songs that are based on this poem :D

    well, that's all

  44. Hi Miss Mónica,

As you told us in class, the poem “Go where Glory waits thee” can be interpreted in different ways.

For me, the poem is about lovers who must be separated because the boy will travel very far. The girl tells him not to forget her, to remember the moments they have lived together and that she will never forget him.

Also, the poem can be about a relationship between a mother and a daughter or between best friends who have to separate by a very strong reason so they tell to never forget each other.

I really loved this poem because it is very emotional knowing the feelings of one person to another when they must separate.

I hope you like my comment.

  45. Hi Miss Monica ♥,

First of all, I would like to congratulate you about the lessons you always give us, all the work and ppt´s you did.

To start, for me, with only reading the tittle it is know that is a romanctic poem.

Well ... I will be very honest, when I read the poem the first time, I thought that Moore wrote the poem for someone, but then you mentioned in the class that the poem could be from anybody to anybody, so I associated that with a situation that is happening now: a person write from another one, but with one porpouse that he/she wanted to be remember. Also that he/she had to be remember for all the time they spent together.

I know what I´m going to say doesn´t match of what I've said, but I´m also want to tell you that I will miss you a lot, don´t forget to remember us!

See you in the next class,
    MANY MANY MANY kisses,

well, about the poem i think it is beatiful, i really liked it because it express the love that have the man to the lover as he is always repeating "oh please remember me" it is obvious that he is really in love with the girl and he will miss her a lot but the only thing that worries him is to be remembered by the girl because he doesnt want to change his love for anybody else.
well miss thats my interpretation of the poem.
    "remember me!"
    see you next class!

  48. Hi miss ,

Well in my opinion i think that this poem is very romatic ,and it is made for me becase i am in love of the love.I appreciate how Moore refer to she ,i think he found the exact words to make she feels guilty and made she think if leave may not be the best decision .
Last but not least ,nowadays we found these kinds of phrases in songs or in peruvian literature ,so famous writers ,explain how unfair could be the love.

So ,Miss have a good night ,see you on Monday

  49. Hi miss,
Well as it is obvious, Moore does not wanted to be forgoten. I think, that may be noboy ever told him about his achievements or things like that, and that is why he wanted to be remembered, to be important, to make a difference in someone's else life, or may be it was for a close friend but really close who was leaving to another country, who knows. Of course I like it, and I admire the way he can write, not only with the hands but also with the heart.

  50. Hi miss,
Well I think that as this poem says
he really wanted to be remembered by someone
who, in my opinion, must be someone he really loved and he really was going to miss.
He just wanted to be importante for her,
to be remembered because he was somenone who
made her feel an stronger feeling as maybe
he was also remebering her in that way.
